AC Compressor Noise

 Mine is loud and clunking :)  there goes another possible $1600

I bought a new A/C compressor or my '83 Mercedes 300SD for $ 300. Another $ 50 or so for the receiver dryer that needs replacing along with the compressor. Another $ 300 or so for labor and recharging the system. I think $ 1,600 is far fetched if the A/C compressor is your problem. The one on my Mercedes was apparently one of those Advance Auto parts or Auto Zone "rebuilt" specials that someone put on before I got the car. It started making grinding noises shortly after. I have seen this same thing with crappy Auto Zone A/C compressors several years ago. I think that they do not even rebuild these compressors, but only change seals on them and clean them up . A decent rebuilt A/C compressor will cost almost as much as a new one from an aftermarket supplier. BTW, new GM A/C compressors from GM dealers are not that high either.

I just had the compressor replaced in my 03 Yukon XL at a total cost of $1200. He's not far off.

I could replace the compressor in my 1986 mustang SVO myself for under 200 bucks. Life is different with a newer car.

Did the whole job on my 94' for about $300. Compressor, dryer and orphus. Labor was done by a buddy of ours. He was happy to accept Miller Lite as payment.

However its making noise again. I think I'm just gonna try an oil charge first.

Replaced mine last summer. Compressor and dryer cost bout $450 (AC Delco), but after getting 3 wrong ones, they gave me a slight discount. To have the lines evacuated after I got it put together and then filled was about $150. Not too bad.
