new z-71 owner, few question

I just bought a new 2006 Silverado Ext. Cab Z-71 and was wondering if the skid plate gets in the way of changing the oil? If so any tips to lessen the mess? Thanks

Can't answer for the 2006, but with my 2002 with skid plates there is no issue.

Welcome to GM-Trucks.com by the way!

The floor gets messier than my skids do...d@mn oil always shoots out farther than I think it will. The filter sometimes drips on the plate, but nothing a rag won't take care of.

When I changed the oil on our '01 the oil always shot out but then ended up dripping on the skid plate along with oil from the oil filter adapter. I would take the skid plate off and clean it. There are only 4 bolts and it was a pain but I did not like the leak on the garage floor.

I have not changed the oil on our new '06 Sierra Denali but it looks like the same set up.

Yes. It makes a freakin' mess on the skid plate once the flow starts going back under the oil pan. Wedge a piece of cardboard between the oil pan and skid plate angled down into your drain pan to get the stuff that likes to make a mess. As above, this helps with the filter as well.

I always just take it off along with the plastic one in front (makes it easy to get all of the zerks from underneath). When I did the first change/grease the skid plate got all full of oil, and I had a :) of a time getting at some of the zerks.

I use the Fram Sure Drain replacement drain plug that has the hose that attaches to it, works like a charm, no more mess.

For $25.00 -$30.00 let the dealer do it - in and out in 1/2 hour or less - can't beat it!

I don't have one of these trucks, but the plate sounds like a minor inconvenience. Having to take it to a dealer, pay them twice as much as it would cost for you to do it and having to schedule a time to do it is a costly hassle in my book.

I don't trust the high school kids that tey hire at the dealerships to do an oil change, I would rather do it myself.

I dont know about your 2006, but on my 2000, the filter is vertical. I wrap a quart ziplock bag around the filter (kind of like a glove) and most of the oil falls into that. Someone had mentioned about cutting a gallon milk jug, turning it upside down then trimming it and using it as a custom fitting funnel so that the oil coming out of the drain plug wouldn't get on the plates. I haven't tried that yet but he said it works great.
