Lug Nut Caps

Recommended Posts

I feel like a idiot. I just about destroyed the plastic center caps on my front wheels prying the black plastic lug nut covers off. The dealer or local tire shop has never so much as nicked the center caps. There's got to be a trick. Even after getting them off I still couldn't figure out how it was supposed to be done. Can somebody help me out before I mangle the rear ones too?.

They simply screw off. I am not understanding which wheel though, so if in reference to the chrome/painted cap on the steel wheel, then it unscrews.

To get the black/dark grey plastic lug covers off the center ring, then simply pop them out with the bottom (handle portion) of a screwdriver.

Hope this helps.

You have to be careful not to tighten them too much when reinstalling them or you break them.

Just to add to the 'not so smart club' - do mine also unscrew - the chrome wheel is really like a hubcap - does the whole thing come off or do the lug covers unscrew.....hope that was clear? Thanks for helping!

One think I did note - the lug nut covers are the only thing holding the center cover on. Also I think the clips on the lug nut covers engage the lug nuts but I didn't notice if the feature they engaged was a thread. If it is and they just unscrew I'm really gonna feel stupid.

I dunno what year were takin' about here, but the plastic covers on my 94' won't break. Mainly because they can only tighten so much. If you continue to tighten they just loosen up. I think the thread pattern is wierd on them or something.

They don't loosen up, the threads are just plastic so they stretch and give. Basically its just the threads stripping, don't do this a lot.
