locking rear differential...

Was this just an option for these trucks? Or did some come with a locking rear differential? Not just limited slip (which isn't the same thing right?)

I know some dealers/people refer to limited slip as a locking rear differential but I thought they were two different things...

Thanks!

Option code G80 is GM's automatic locking rear differential which allows for a limited amount of slip when not engaged. Call it whatever you prefer. I have also heard of some other traction aiding device other than the G80 made by Eaton, but not sure. It is also possible different models/years received a different traction device represented by G80 (One G80 may not be the same as another G80). :(

The pickup trucks, in at least in 2002 1500's, the locking G80 was an option, not standard in in any way. It was like a 400-500 dollar option on the 2002 Z71 1500 I had. It was standard with the 2002 Z71 Avalanche though.

On my 02 Z71 it has a locking rear diff (or at least it says locking rear diff on the sticker from the dealer). Gets much better traction than my 95 z71 with limited slip.

The last 2 weeks we have had snow and ice big time. . My 07 came with the G80 locker and I am now a believer. . .I have been able to drive on roads that I can't walk on. . . At work I'm the only pickup that can get in or out not to mention most cars. . . So far I love it. . .

Its a stand alone option G80 (look at your glovebox sticker) but it has been packaged some years with Z71 & Z82.

I wouldnt buy a vehicle with out it or at least traction control.
