DVD/Navigation System

As you all know the 2006 Sierras do not have the option of a Navigation system. So I am wondering if you all think I should go for an aftermarket system or try to find a stock system that would go in another Denali vehicle or escalade or whatever would work in the Sierra. Which would you do?

I am very Happy with my Kenwood Double-DIN that I have in my 95 Roadmaster Wagon. I'm thinking of putting the same thing in my new 07 CC. The touchscreen and DVD capabilities are great. I just think that anything that folds out and flips up looks completely stupid. I prefer the intergrated look.

Go to that nav cd install that linda did tons of info. like everthing first time you do it's hard, so do it to someone elses truck first, much easier the second time I bet.

Go aftermarket. OE Unit wont play DVD's. Alpine IVA-W200 is a pretty nice double din unit with killer iPod support! I had a Kenwood DDX8017 and, for lack of better words, it was lame.

I personally prefer the Kenwood system vs. the other brands for many different reasons.

1. Kenwood partnered with Garmin in '06 and built an awesome navigation module (KNA-G510). It has the same foundation as the Garmin Nuvi (Garmin's #1 portable nav piece).

2. The navigation module (KNA-G510) is a seperate flash drive component that can be mounted anywhere at any angle. This way you haven't have to choose between navigation or a video source. You can play both at the same time.

3. "Text To Speech" feature. Audibly tells u the name of the street to turn on as oppose to "turn left in 100 feet".

4. Has the ability to connect XM Nav Traffic to it via GXM-30 (which is also a XM tuner) for live traffic updates, weather, stocks & more.

5. You can also have XM playing through the KNA-G510 via the GXM-30.

6. The KNA-G510 has a built in vehicle computer, sort of like an electronic instrument cluster with all relevant information displayed, including elevation and latitude & longtitude coordinates.

7. The KNA-G510 software can be updated through Garmin's website. Simply download the update onto a SD card and stick the SD card into the KNA-G510 and you're done. This should be a huge selling point since Garmin constantly updates their databases.

8. If you off road or drive on a lot of rough terrain (like I do), this system is awesome because it's a flash drive setup. No need to worry about the laser getting out of alignment or the expensive DVD rom disc getting scratched by bumping into the laser housing.

I gotta disagree with 99silver6.0. I love my DDX8017! What's not to love? SRS Wow, built in 5.1 processor, 5V pre outs, built in crossover, built in EQ, 2 A/V outputs, 2 A/V inputs, dedicated reverse camera input, JPEG or MPEG playback while playing music in the background & a whole lot more.

Just my 2 cents.

And thats the only thing the Kenwood DoubleD's really have going for them. Garmins nav unit and thats pretty much it. The iPod control sucks something awful!! My W200 just plain clowns on the 8017. I wanted flawless iPod control. The 8017's so called iPod control was far, far, far from flawless. Lame to be precise. Can you put your own wallpaper images on the DDX?? Last I checked thats a negative.

Yeah you're right. The iPod interface with the DDX8017 and the KCA-IP500 (Kenwood's old iPod adaptor) is horrible. It's too f'in slow and no you can't change the wallpaper either. In regards to the positive attributes I mentioned about the DDX8017, you gotta be kiddin me! Those are huge in regards to overall sound quality. Last I checked, that is.

On the flip side, the DDX8017's replacement, the DDX8019 is f'in awesome! It has the fastest, most intuitive iPod control on the market via it's KCA-IP200 or KCA-IP300V iPod cable! It gives you 4 customizable lines of text in addition to displaying the cover art from your iPod next to the 4 lines of text! The 8019 is the only system on the market that allows video iPod owners to select their video selection and play it directly from the touchscreen! Other systems will allow you to make a video selection, but you'll have to hit play on the iPod to play what you've selected. Kenwood markets the 8019 as the fastest iPod interface on the market! The 8019 also has two USB inputs! One for an iPod and the other for any other USB device (flash drive, card reader, MP3 player, etc). The 8019 also has the ability to store upto 3 wallpapers, allowing you to select one as the systems wallpaper (just like your PC's desktop)! You just simply upload your pics onto the 8019 via it's SD slot. In addition to all of this, the 8019 also has two external switches!!! The possibilities are endless with this feature. For example, you could turn on your off-road lights, open a garage door, motorized amp rack, LED lighting, etc. All controlled directly on the touchscreen!!!

I went with the OE nav... it works, the dealer won't freak out when you take it in for repairs, and I generally don't have to worry about some punk-kid breaking into my truck to steal the radio.

On ebay you can find them for around $800 or so if you shop carefully and its plug/play.
