Brake Light

Hope i'm in the right place new to this site. I just bought a 92 chevy work truck because i badly need a plow for my driveway. Seems to be in ok shape other than the previous owner told me the brake light has been on the past 3 years. Brakes seem to be ok and he said the lines were all replaced last year. Any ideas what might cause the brake light to be on? Not ebrake, regular brake light. Thanks.

I'm assuming you mean the Brake telltale light in the dash??

if so you could have a bad pressure switch, the parking brake may not be releasing all the way or the switch on the parking brake may be bad

or

if the wiring harness to the brake lights is disconnected you can have that telltale light .

its also possible you have a bad brake light fuse.

The parking brake sticks a lot. When it's down I have to push on it with my foot while pulling the release. I wonder if that's the issue?

there is a switch at the top of the parking brake mechanism, thats what turns the lighht on when the P brake is applied. possible P brake isn't releasing all the way maintaining contact on that switch..

OK when I pull up hard on the parking brake the light goes from solid lit to an intermittent blinking. I pulled the wire off the switch but it still blinks intermittently. I would think pulling that wire off would turn the light off. Light definately changes when I mess around with the pedal. Also had the check engine light checked at the parts store and they said the code is for a coolant sensor but also told me there are two of them. How would I know which one might be turning the light on?

let me quote something GM used to print in every diagnosis section they ever wrote... QUOTE "{ MANY TIMES A CLOSE VISUAL OBSERVATION WILL REVEAL THE SOURCE OF THE PROBLEM"{

to answer your question of how do you know, my response is you won't, unless you are skilled in the use of a voltmeter and have wiring diagrams to follow.

otherwise you make educated guesses and try to eliminate all the possibilities, just like a good detective.

did you check and see if your brake lights turn signals work on back of truck??

also check the brake fuse?? mine had an issue with intermittent no speedometer and concurently the brake lite coming on and it ended up being a corroded fuse. wierd!!

my truck is one year newer than yours and I had the same issue several times. one time it was the fuse was corroded, and other time the brake lite harness had come unplugged at the connector I have for the trailer lite receptacle. I didn't think to check to see if the lites worked for about a month, as soon as I fixed that the lite went out on dash. live and learn.

wierd thing with my 2nd scenario was if you started the truck brake telltale would be out, if you drove the truck once it hit 36 mph the brake lite would come on. wierdest thing I ever seen, I was to focused on it being a switch or wiring problem to ever think to check the brake lites even though if I woulda used my noggin a little bit and also connected the rapid flashing of the turn signals to the same problem I woulda looked on the back of the truck.

same goes for brake pressure switch in master cyl, try disconnecting it, if no response try jumping it and see if that makes a change.

Actually I had a tail light issue and found a broken wire and fixed it. All tail lights work now. The parking brake seems to affect the telltail dash brake light. It's either on solid or if I pull the parking brake pedal up towards me it intermittently blinks. I know that issue is with the p brake. The sensor I'm not sure about is the service engine light/code which is temp sensor and they told me there are two different ones. I'll probabl take it to the shop for them to figure out which sensor, can't cost me that much. Thanks for the help at least I found the issue with the dash brake warning light.
