VIN to locate vehicle

Not sure if it would work, but I'm trying to locate an old truck I used to own back in 1996-1999. Would a CarFax report help in this?

 

If not, does anyone know how to find it?

 

Also, just for kicks, does anyone have a carfax account they can run the VIN to see what the truck has been up to. Yeah, I know I'm weird. LOL.

 

So does anyone know?

CarFax will tell that you that's it's been registered in a particular state/province, but it won't give you any info on the previous/current owner or location (other than state/province).

It'll also give you info on any accidents/repairs etc if applicable.

I thought about that, and was wondering if the states DMV would be allowed to tell me who owns it. Or if they're even capable.

I went to register a snowmobile here in maine a couple of years ago and got a really weird response by the clerk. She said "Boy that ones really been around". Which led me to ask how many previous registrations it had had. I couldn't even find that out. Let alone who had owned it. The "Privacy Act" you know......
