swapping axle on a 1994 1/2 ton

Just got a 94 c1500 with a 4.3L. I think the rear end might be on its way out cause i hear a howling noise while driving. I was thinking of swapping in a complete rear axle from a salvage yard. This truck came with a 3.08 gear and i would like it to have a 3.42. Normally i would go for a 3.73 but this truck is a 2wd and the tires are on the small side. Will all the half ton axles bolt on the truck say from 88-98?

I would think so but I'm no expert. I believe most chevy 10-bolts are almost identical, however.

i think so too as long as they 10 bolt truck axles. By the way i see you are from swartz creek, i'm only about 15 minutes east of you in Burton. Nice tp see someone on here that is close.

it should fit, although the 4WD's had 6 lug wheels.

you will probably have to switch axle shafts.

Oh ya...i forgot about the 4x4's havng six lugs and the 99 and up trucks too. I also heard they may have made the NSB trucks with a wider 10 bolt, Could be true i guess.

Another thing to look out for, my 98 came with a 6 lug 14 bolt semi floating rear with 3.42 gears.

You are one of the lucky ones that got the "baby" 14 bolt. Wish they still had that option now.

I'm having trouble getting a real tow rating for this truck. No rating sees the 14 bolt rear on the 1500. The tow rating on anything close to this truck is 7500lbs.. Is this true?

Any help would be apreciated!

Don't mean to jump topics but this would help!

Sorry, Scott

It dosen't matter what rear-end you have, the tow rating is the same,What makes the difference is the gear ratio.

7500lbs for 3.73 and 6500lbs for 3.42.

I had both a '94 and a '97 with the 14-bolt 9-1/2" rear-end,My '94 had 3.42's and was rated at 6500lbs. and my '97 had 3.73's and was rated at 7500lbs. towing.

The 14-bolt 9-1/2" rear-end came in trucks with the "F44" Heavy-Duty-Chassis Pkg. and increased the GVWR from 6200lbs to 6600lbs. but it did not increase the tow rating according to GM.

Would it be safe to assume that 4.10's would tow 8500 lbs.? I think I read that somewhere. I wanted to regear this winter to 4.10's for a larger trailer. Fifth wheel for more stability and manuvering.

Thanks.

Don't know,It sounds logical,GM never offered 4.10's in the Old-Body-Style 1/2-ton trucks,You had to go up to a 2500 with a GVWR of 8600lbs. to get 4.10's.

The size of the brakes and type of vehicle is also a factor in the factory towing capacity formula..... Having gears that pull does not mean you will be able to stop it..... The 14 bolt also came with bigger brake drums....
