Stainless Steel Tailgate Straps

I bought some stainless steel tailgate straps for my 2000 GMC Sierra, this replaces the GM Cables.

Those are nice, are the stock ones cheap? Is there a reason to change them? Just wondering.

Dana_15: The older stock cables had a recall on them. They were wire straps with a plastic coating on them. In areas where salt was used in winter the salt/water got under the plastic and rotted them out and cuase tailgate failure (the straps broke and the tailgate slammed onto the bumper.) The new ones have the straps inside of the metal outer ends so there is no more rust potential.
