hello all!

new the forum. i have a jeep cj resto shop if anyone is into jeeps feel free to say hello. i have an 01 silverado 2wd shortbed with a 4.8 and auto. i found a great deal on a 8.1 with very low miles that i am considering swapping into my truck. i know it wont be easy but i am up for the challange. i tow jeeps often with the truck and i am wearing the 4.8 out fast. its a great engine but not really meant for towing. i know the engine mount will need changed. and some wiring issues. i just though it would awesome to have a 2wd shortbed 496ss!! remember the old 90 454ss??? any thoughts or info would be a great help. look forward to chatting with everyone!

you'll need ALL of the computer and wiring harnesses and modules, you will need to reinforce the front frame and beef up the suspension to handle the weight and you will need a new transmission *duh* and a new rearend and a custom driveshaft. But yeah it would be freakin awesome.

i dunno if youll need all that extra stuff..

just the 8.1 with computer and wiring harness and its Trans or any 4L80e trans

( same thing)

the reinforcment for the wieght isnt necessarily needed. the 8.1 doesnt weigh a LOT more than a smallblock

the rear end is questionable.. unless you plan hauling big loads

what is your truck? how long is the bed/ cab, Youll probably be able to match up a driveshaft off another GMC or chevy

Correct, the frame is good but the trans and rear are questionable.

driveshaft is the least of my worries. i dont feel the frame will need reinforced. i know i will need the wiring. i was concerned if the engine side harness will plug up to the inside(guages) (ign). The motor mounts were my main concern. i feel the rear axle will hold up under normal conditions. it will spin before breaking.

Considering a healthy 6 liter will probably outperform the 8.1 and get better mileage to boot, I'd be looking for a nice LS2 to swap in.
