Loud clunk

I have noticed my truck will make a clunk noise (metal against metal) when it is placed in either drive or reverse. The truck is a 2000 GMC Sierra with 60K on it 5.3L 4x4. I was told that it could be the U joints but they dont seem to be loose nor does the drive shaft. Has anyone ever expierenced this problem before?

Slip yolk.

very common. I have it as well.

Yea my last truck did that. Took it in and they said it was the slip yoke. I cant remember what exactly was the problem. I want to say it was something to do with the splines not being lubed up enough or something to that effect, but I could be wrong.

is it bad to drive my truck in this condition and or will it cause problems in the future, and how much will it cost to repair and is it a big job

Yolk? Is it yellow and mushy?

I think I have a yoke on my truck.

Greasing the yoke splines with heavy waterproof grease helps.

Oh ok so it wont cause any problems in the condition it is in. It just has to do with greasing the spines? I kinda have a dumb question to ask what is the procedure to engage 4LOW...... This is my first time buying a 4x4. The 2Hi 4Hi conversion seems simple just move the floor shifter either at a stop or crawl.

For 4LOW, you have to drop it out of gear...

WHEN IN 2HI or 4HI AND WANT TO SWITCH TO 4LO:

1.) Place gearshift in (N)eutral

2.) Shift the transfer case (the short 4-wheel lever) into 4-LO. It may flash a few times, then show a steady burn of a light.

3.) Place the gearshift into the specific gear, weather it being (D)rive, (3)rd, (2)nd, or (1st). I usually drop it into low (on the GMC Jimmy) because 4LO is such a low gear ratio, that you really dont want it going over 3-5mph, and when it does shift to 2nd, its uncomfortably rough.

NOTE: When you do shift it from Neutral to any other gear when in 4LO, it is normal for the entire truck to lurch a bit while holding the brake, or the shift to be extremely rough (at least i hope so...mine does  )

Welcome to the gear ratio of about 9,000:1. The ability to tow a house down with a single lurch, and the capacity to eat as much gas as possible. :banghead::banghead::banghead:

Yeah, that's about the size of it...it's nice to have that kind of power at your disposal.
