Leaking fluid

Recommended Posts

I have a reddish fluid leaking from the driver side, most noteably in the front left wheel well.

I originally thought it was a blown shock from putting green keys on and cranking them a bit. However, I since replaced shocks with Rancho RS 99295 in front, RS 99262 rears. (Shock may be too short for the 2" or so "lift".)

Now the fluid appears here again.

The only other logical source could be from the brake master cylinder unit on the inside firewall, but I am not low brake fluid even though the master cylinder appears wet.

Any clues on how to tell if shock blown?

It might be from the vent for the front differential. I have the same thing on a 2000 4X4 Silverado. On my truck the vent is under the hood and ends at the wheel well.

Reddish fluid on the driver's side wheel well is typically PS fluid or gear lube blowing out of the front axle vent. Have you been driving around in 4WD on dry pavement? Or one of you PS hoses has a leak.

No, it's PS fluid leaking from the PS fluid cooler in front of the radiator. There might be some cheezy hose clamps there and that might be all that's wrong. It's a mess to take it out, but it's not a *hard* job, if you don't mind getting your arms covered with grime... Take out the old one and examine whether it's just a hoseclamp leak before you spring for a new cooler.

I degreased everything on the driver side, inside the engine compartment, and front left wheel well. Included the brake master cylinder, and whatever other brake components adjacent, and all the lines running on top of the frame down below the Master (all covered with old "grease/fluid" of some sort, some old some wet). Also, cleaned the lines from the wheel well angle. So far no new leaking, so I cannot tell where it was from.

Had my bother's bro-in-law, a GM tech., said almost all GM master cylinder, and abs units coated with fluid/dirt over time. Just accumulates. However, it appeared to be alot of "wet" fresh fluid.

Does not have the smell of gear oil though. Could have been PS fluid because that is the only resevoir slightly low. Also, two lines running from PS res to brake/abs unit for some reason.

Oh well we shall see.

That's for your hydroboost unit. The power steering pump supplies the extra boost pressure for your brakes rather than engine vacuum. I wish the 1500s came with that option as it's much better.
