I decided to re-gear to 4.10

OK, I decided to re-gear my truck to haul my next camper. Got 3.42 and want to go to 4.10. Gas is coming down right? :)

Does anyone have a recommendation on who would have a good quality complete kit for my 4X4?

Any info would help. I'd rather use something someone has used and can recommend.

Thanks.

Richmond Gear does a good job.

I reccomend Yukon Gears which is what I am running.

That's some low gears! Do you tow a lot?

I'm doing this to tow a trailer loaded to around 8500 lbs. Seems this will get the job done for a couple of years until I can get a 2500 HD. I see your haulin a fifth wheel. I'm lookin at a Springdale 32' BH fifth wheel. 7300 lbs. dry. 1300 bed weight.

Any thoughts? Am I on the right track? How does yours handle?

Randy's ring and pinion is a great place for this.....they have complete rear end kits...They told me that the best quality ring and pinion is Yukon Gears. so go online or give them a call

I recently had the 9.5 14 bolt in my 95 c2500 rebuilt and was told time and time again that the factory GM ring and pinion are by far the strongest and quitest you can get. I ended having the work done at Custom Differentials here in Missouri. The owner Jeremy is very friendly and knowledgable. You can find his work pasted all over the covers of the off-road and 4WD mags. He re-itterated that if you can afford the GM parts, use em... I personally could not afford them and went with what he considered a distant second US Gear (strange) in 4.10 and a new G80 to replace the aged (285,000 mi) factory unit.

if you change the gears in the rear differentialdo you have to change them in the front for 4X4? I want to put a 4.10 rear end in my truck! Whats the best way to do that?

Yes you would also have to change the front gears. Technically you could install just rear and get away with it, but you would chew the transfer case up, especially with that drastic of a change. If you are in a bind and don't use 4x4 much or at all, then the rear would be good for a while but it's definitely recommended that you do both. Gears are cheaper than a new transfer case haha.

For 4.10 gears, some of them are a little offset. Like when I was looking up gears for my 80 GMC with a 12 bolt rear, it listed 4.09 for the front Dana 44 and 4.11 for the rear GM 12 bolt, and after researching it, I found out that some gear sets are usually a couple hundredths off in ratio (like 3.70 and 3.73 etc) and it'll be fine as long as it's in the same ballpark. But 3.42 front and 4.10 rear, no. You'll kill the transfer case when you move about 5 feet in 4-LO.
