Oil Pressure ?

WHen I start my truck (5.3L), the OP goes up to around 40, when I get on the truck pretty good, the most I've seen it climb to is just over 60. Normally at idle it sits at about 30-40. Tonight as I sat in traffic the needle at idle was at 0. Yes, 0. I don't think I've ever seen it that low. This bothers me only because the truck it right where it should be with oil. It did go up each time I hit the gas, but for a good hour while in traffic it stayed at 0.

 

Should I be concerned or is this normal.

 

PS - I am using Royal Purple, and a PureOne filter, and the truck exhibited no signs of anything else being wrong.

Zero is definitely not normal! Specs call for 10 psi at 1000 rpms. Do you also get a chime and a low oil pressure text msg on the DIC? If not, it may be the gauge itself. The only way to know for sure is to put a mechanical gauge on the engine so you know what the true pressure is.

Yeah, it was 0, as if the guage was not even on. No message on the DIC, and like I said, it has oil in it! So if the idle is set around 600-700 RPM's the I should be around 5 psi???

Even though the spec is 10 psi at 1000 rpms, 20 psi or thereabouts is the usual hot engine pressure at idle. It varies of course, but no where near as low as 5 psi at idle.

 

Sounds like you might have a gauge problem.
