When to start using Synthetic oil?

I have a 07 silverado 4.3. I have about 750 miles on it. I put about 15 miles a day on it, a total of 3 short trips. I also live in NY. I am concerned about the short trips and the cold coming up. Truck would barely get warmed up in winter than shutoff.

Would a Synthetic oil be better than Dino oil in my case??. I plan on changing the oil @ 1000 miles with Castrol GTX 5w/30. Again when would be a good time to change the oil to Syn??

If you want to use syn oil, start using it whenever you want. You can use it now if you want.

I have heard varying opinions on this. Some say to allow the engine a break in period on dino but you have to remember that several HP or premium vehicles now come with syn as factory fill. Because of this, I believe you can begin at any time as long as it is not a very high mileage engine with leaks. Syn oil will find a leak quicker than dino.

 

You may also consider other brands of syn. I used Castrol Syntec for years but now am an Amsoil user. It seems Mobil is the brand of choice on this forum.

Hmmm

 

My first change, I went to Mobil synth, the (due to confusion at the shop) to Mobil 1, and last change back to Synth.

 

I just assumed thatsynth is good from day one. Is there some reason not to use a full synthetic? (Other of course than the ridiculous price!!! I am in Europe now, and paying about $12 PER QUART !!!! Yikes)

As long as you don't have any oil leaks, you can switch to synthetic whenever you want. You can switch back if you don't like it.
