nomad37tc Posted October 8, 2006 Posted October 8, 2006 I just replaced my altenator, I was losing power while running headlight or heat in the morning .amp guage would drop to 10 amps causing to stall at red lights.I still have the problem only stalls in gear though ,and has poor acceleration and it skips.HELP!!!

Look closely at the ends of the cables between the insulation and the connection. If there is a break in the insulation and you see corrosion, REPLACE the Cable. If you're comfortable with a VOM check for resistance in the cables. Anything over a few oHms and the cable is on it's way out. Also clean all the ground straps, and attaching points to clean metal, Wire brush all bolts, screws to clean metal, and use either die-electric grease or Vaseline on all contact points. Check your voltage at the battery with the engine OFF, then check it again with the engine ON. Off should be between 12.6 and 13.5 or so. Running should be Above 13.5 and no more than 15.0. (Do this BEFORE and AFTER cleaning all the cable ends, write down the results and see how much difference). Make sure you also clean the Starter Terminals. Also make sure there is at least one ground strap or even two (much better) (in addition to the Negative battery cable on the engine) to the frame, preferably one next to the starter on the block, and the other on the other side of the block. If the cables are corroded, get the LARGEST Diameter cable you can get (usually 2 gauge). I use 0 gauge welding Cable and solder my connections on the ends, coat the ends with liquid tape, then shrink wrap them. You wouldn't believe how fast my starter turns now and how cool (temp wise ) the cables are when I'm drawing 80-90 amps thru them. Just route them same as factory, and if they are within 3" of the exhaust manifolds, use header heat wrap. Larry
