ok so driving my 97 2500 with a 5.7 vortec down the road the other day and a SES light comes on and it proceeds to not be able to go above 40mph. i pull over and see that the passenger side manifold is glowing red hot.. have it towed 2 hrs home to the mechanic and he is stumped. he fixed the distributor and a ground to the computer... now it will run but very bad. the exhaust manifold is still glowing and you can smell raw gas. the truck has about 150k on it but is a real great truck. ANY IDEAS????

plugs and wires are brand new.... i think the mechanic is checking the timing as we speak... how many degrees off could the timing be in order for it to do this.???? have you ever heard of the chain jumping teeth?

you can only put a vortec distributor in one way. that cam position sensor would not let it run if it jumped a tooth. for it to be glowing that red it would have to be lean as heck or a pluged converter not letting the exhaust out and that is causing the lack of power. i hate to say it but if cast iron was glowing red hot the motor might be toasted.

Just my .02

This is usually a timing issue. Combustion is continuing to occur in the manifold due to late timing.

Also, It may be running too rich and in combination with an exhaust leak cause combustion to continue to take place in the exhaust.
