Prodigy Brake controller wiring

I am going to be pulling a travel trailer with my '05 Sierra in the spring, and I need to get the brake controller figured out. I have the towing pkg and it came with a wiring harness with a rectangular plug on one end that plugs in under the dash on the drivers side and the other end is just open wires. I know that when I looked at the Prodigy brake controller they had a wire harness that you could buy with it . . . is this one that came w/ my truck all I need to hook up the controller?

 

Any info appreciated.

The model-specific harness is all you need in addition to the controller. The one that came with the truck is a universal pigtail. Forget it if you can get the specific one for the GM trucks. Installation takes minutes.

I picked up the pigtail for my Prodigy on Ebay.

 

It makes wiring super simple... it has modular plugs on both ends, one end goes to the truck, and the other goes to the controller. It allows for quick removal of the controller so that it can be used in another tow vehicle that has a Prodigy pigtail in it.

The Prodigy controller come with a "universal" wiring harness and a chart that shows which wire on the Prodigy harness connects to the truck harness. The chart has connections for Ford, Dodge and GM so make sure you use the right wires. IIRC, there was a change in the GM wires and the Prodigy chart has two versions based on the year of the GM truck.

 

The "plug and play" harness goes for around $10 or so and I would think that any larger RV or trailer dealer that sells Tekonsha controllers would have them.

 

The factory wiring harness is about 3 feet long and the Prodigy harness is about the same length. I cut most of the wire off the Prodigy harness and used butt-splice connectors to connect the wires. The truck plug is easy to fins as it's shown in the owner's manual. Just make sure the excess wire is tied up out of the way of the brake pedal. I used a few wire ties to strap it in.

You can buy the premade harness from Tekonsha, or you can take the 5 minutes and match up wires from your factory harness to the Prodigy pigtail. I chose to match up wires so the harness wasnt too long overall. If you buy the pre-made one, you are stuck with that length unless you cut it up.

 

Matching up the 4 wire colors from your factory harness to the Prodigy pigtail is a piece of cake. The Prodigy comes with a manual that tells you what color goes to what.
