Going to the dealership.....

I'm finally taking the HD to the dealership Tuesday for some warranty work. Anything I should ge tthem to look at (TSB's, etc.) while it's there? I am getting them to correct the following problems:

- Steering 'clunk' - TSB

- Busted speaker in passenger side door

- Check the 'whining' noise under hood - I have read that this is 'one of those things' but want to have it documented just in case there is a failure later.

- 'Humming' sound coming from muffler when truck is cold - I think there is a TSB for this and they remove the muffler shroud?

Sounds a lot like my 2005 Silverado 2500HD. I have the whining noise, steering clunk, and buzzing sound from the muffler only for the first minute or so when cold.

I chose not to complain about the whining or the buzzing muffler because I figured the dealer would just make things worse.

Let me know if they end up tearing off your heat shield. That would suck.

I think the whine is coming from the alternator and if they try to fix it they'll probably make your power steering system leak. So be careful.

The thought police might take this opportunity (as they have others) to insist that it's the trans whining, but they'll never convince me of that and I know what I'm talking about. I used to be a licensed master mechanic (licensed in all 8 automotive categories to sign work orders) in the state of Michigan.

I had the same problem with the muffler on my 04HD making a buzzing sound, it only seemed to be noticable when the Truck was driven for awhile, dealer replaced the muffler and tailpipe under warrenty. I think the tailpipe and Muffler are one piece.

mmmikkke... glad to see that GM is consistent with fouling up vehicles :D . Must be something with the paint color, eh  ?

trask... I wish I could get them to throw on a Corsa instead of the factory setup :flag: if that's the fix (since I'm sure that the factory exhaust is probably more expensive than the Corsa). Maybe I can talk the mechanic into ordering a Corsa for me as a replacement (nothing wrong with wishing LOL).

If you don't have the stock PCM to replace your custom tune with, then make sure you tell the service manager that you specifically "DO NOT" want the PCM reflashed.

I forgot to do that once with my "01 6.0L, and the dealer was kind enough to overwrite my custom Westers tune...

Luckily, I requested a certain mechanic look at it and he knows 'the deal' on it  but thanks for the heads-up.

I had the whinning noise on my truck and finally found a dealer to take a look at it. They ended up replacing the power steering pump citing that as the cause and I had no more noise. That was back in about March. Guess what, the sound is back again. I'm starting to wonder if there is an aftermarket pump that won't make that noise, it get's irritating after a while.

Thing is, the whine comes and goes. So that's why I think it can't be *fixed*, but only reduced, and then only for a while.

Maybe the PS fluid is getting aireated and that's when it whines. Or may be it only whines until it gets aireated.

I thought the same thing but mine whines most of the time.... even on initial startup after sitting all night. Wouldn't aireation be more likely while the truck moves (such as going around a curve or turn)? I know all the cars that I've seen with aireateing problems did it mainly after taking them through some sharp turns, etc.

I'll get them to check it and see what they say...... I guess I may have to live with it :D . Then again, the dealership does have a nice looking Siverado SS sitting out front (I told the wife I was going to talk junk to the salesman about trading the HD for it :driving:).

I have the same issue with the passenger door speaker. 06 2500HD, noticed it at about 1800 miles, radio has never been above about 30% volume. "Static" is the best way to describe the sound. Is this a common problem?

That's my exact problem, don't know if it is a common problem.... guess I'll find out tomorrow.

You know the chime comes through the left speaker. Try turning on your headlights while the radio is playing and your key is removed, so the chime happens. See if the static changes after you turn off the headlights and the chime stops.

I would go on to say that the 'sound' I have sounds like a blown speaker.

I replaced the front speakers in my truck. The factory woofer is ok quality (although it says, Made in Mexico, on it). The tweeter is a joke. Must have cost GM 99 cents. The woofer is 4-ohm and the tweeter is 8-ohm. Purchasing must have overruled engineering, again!

And it gets worse. The crossover is a bipolar electrolytic capacitor. That's it. That means the woofer gets the whole frequency spectrum, and the tweeter gets mostly the high end, but the bipolar cap only attenuates the low end by 6 dB per octave. That's shameful! There had to be driver resonances all over the frequency spectrum.

Total cost of components like that at a partsexpress.com? Probably about 10 bucks.

You wouldn't have to spend much at all to do better.

agreed... but as long as it's under warranty, GM will be fixing anything that goes wrong.

I took the truck today...

- they re-greased the steering (fixed for now )

- ordered a replacement speaker

- ordered a new 'muffler' (not exactly sure what they will do since the service writer didn't seem to know too much :wtf: ). I have faith that it will be done right since I know the mechanic personally and he's one of their best. He's the one that finally got the wife's Trailbalzer SS right (installed a new carrier to get rid of the grinding rear). I'll post an update when the is resolved.

- said that the whine was 'one of those things'.... guess that will have to do, I don't like it but I'll chalk it up to another one of GM's engineering marvels
