Warranty Service

To make a long story short, the local GMC dealership would not deal with me last summer. Besides, even if I did decide to bend over and take it from them they did not have my truck, nor would they start to look or negotiate for it. I ended up going to the city to buy. Got a great deal on this truck (sig). As you can see, it is a Chevy. I need some warranty work done, and they refuse to do it, because it is a Chevrolet. Now I have heard that any GM dealership will honor a GM factory warranty, regardless of the brand. Is this true, or can these a-holes really refuse to work with me. The fact of the matter is that I tried to deal with them and they just dropped the ball. Looking at the parts, the numbers and descriptions are the same for both GMC and Chevy, except for the obvious body parts. So 99% of what is on the shelf is interchangeable. BTW, closest Chevy dealer is 150 miles away. Kind of hard to take it in to get diagnosed, order parts, then take it back to be repaired.

No, a chevy dealer will take a GMC and a GMC dealer will take a Chevy they should not be refusing you.

This is called "Cross-line" warranty and the above is not totally accurate. We are not supposed to perform warranty repairs on another line (Caddy, Buick, etc.)unless it is an emergency repair... dead battery, vehicle won't start, wheel is falling off, etc., etc., and you're closer to us than a dealer that handles your line. A complaint of a loose trim piece would not be considered an emergency, BTW. :D

HOWEVER, we can do any sort of warranty repair on another line and there will be no repercusions UNLESS... If they see we're doing a lot of these "cross-line" warranty repairs, our rep wll get on our butt about it.

Bottom line... it's up to the dealer. We do cross-line warranty without hesitation, even non-emergency repairs, but don't go overboard. The local GMC dealer, which is about 5 miles away, will not touch a Chevy and sends them to us. That's more business for us, so we're okay with that!

Here's what the official GM "Policies and Procedures" manual says about cross-line warranty repairs. Note the line that says participation is voluntary. In other words, if a GMC dealer doesn't want to work on your Chevy under warranty, GM says they are within their rights to refuse you.

------------

CROSS-LINE WARRANTY (excluding Saturn and Saab)

Cross-line warranty allows GM dealers to perform warranty repairs on:

• Non-franchised vehicles requiring emergency repairs under the GM warranty

• Non-franchised used vehicles sold by the selling dealer (including in-stock used

vehicles requiring warranty repair)

• Commercial vehicles (by designated GM commercial truck dealers)

Participation in cross-line warranty is voluntary. Dealers should determine if they

possess the necessary skills (training, tools and parts) before attempting any

cross-line repair. GM dealers are prohibited from promoting or advertising cross-line

warranty repairs. Any violation of this could result in audit, dealer charge back or

termination of cross-line capability. Repairs performed outside of the warranty are not

eligible for cross-line warranty and require wholesale authorization.

Warranty pays just like the rest. Not sure why he would turn business and money away.

It could be that his rep is very strict on this. Who knows. We sure don't turn 'em away in most cases.

There are some warranty companies out there that ruined it for other warranty companies. Some warranty companies will screw dealers over, take long time to pay the dealer, argue over every little detail, say they will pay this and pay less afterwards. Due to this lot of dealer tighten up and only take a manufacture warranty or someone that they have work with in the past that they like.

I have an Olds Alero that I get serviced at my local Pontiac/GMC dealer and they have never turned me away for warranty work.

That's a little different since there are no Oldsmobile dealers anymore. No GM dealer would ever have a problem from GM for doing warranty work on an Olds.

I bring my GMC into the local Chev dealership, and the GMC dealership is right behind them. Never been an issue.

I bring it to the Chevy dealer as the atitude from the GMC dealership sucked.

I guess not many people own Chevrolets where you live.

Like others said, depends on the dealership.

When I had my '99 GMC it needed the oil cooler lines and 2nd battery replaced while still under warranty. The chevy shop I took it to wouldn't touch the truck.

OTOH, I was visiting my wife (um, girlfriend at the time) and on a whim stopped by that chevy shop there to see if they could disable the auto door locks. Not only did they do it for no charge, he updated all the computer "stuff" at the same time.

Since there's hardly any GMC shops, it was a major factor in my current truck being a chevy. Just one less hassle.

Another reason to drop one of the lines. It's the same truck besides badging.

If I had an experience like this, then I think I would rather travel 150 miles than risk leaving it with them. I would take the refusal as a blessing in disguise.

That's just it. There are alot of Chevy's here. They should have endless work. The oil boom is here and there are 100's, if not 1000's of GM fleet trucks around. You would have to drive through my town to believe me but, there is not a driveway here without a diesel pickup, whether it is a Ford, GM, or Dodge. SUV's too. I seen an 07 Escalade in town before I even seen the first commercial on TV. When I lived in Colorado, people noticed my trucks and complimented me all of the time. Here, this truck I have now is just the norm. If you know anything about diesels, you probably have heard of the "Simper Duramax". He is co-owner of the Dieselpage.com. Probably the fastest Dmax in the country that is an everyday driver. I pass him everyday on the way home from work. The numbers on it are something like 750 HP and 1100 ft-lbs of torque. Just FYI.

I just bought a 2006 demo GMC Yukonxl Denali and the dealership where I bought it (Classic GMC in Willoughby) blwe out the headlights jump starting it because the battery was dead. I took it back and they didn't have the bulbs in stock and ended up pirating another 06 for the parts (this dealer has 300 Cadillacs sitting there). Since then I have had nothing but problems......Bad waterpump, bad powersteering pump, bad rear lower control arm links, bad winshield seal, doors not aligned correctlty, bad CD player, moon roof out of alignment, and it has been only 6 weeks since delivery. I have had everything fixed under warranty at a nearby GMC dealer who was very apologetic about the whole thing and then gave me 10% off on all my parts to boot.

Funny how the shiny dealership with the marble floors and nice capuccino machine couldn't fix crap and didn't care while the dealership who only sells GMC and the gray building that is 70 years old and very Spartan diagnosed all the problems in ONE HOUR and had the entire vehicle re-worked by some real mechanics.....now it rides like it should.

Tell your dealer with the bad attitude to pack it.......
