Engine ping a starting around 4000RPM

I purchased a used 2001 Yukon with the 5.3L about 2 months ago. I have noticed when acclerating hard at around 4000RPMs I get a engine ping and have power issues. I have been running 87 octane. When using 89 octane I get less ping but it is still somewhat there. Anyone else run into this. This Truck should run fine on 87. I worry about this due to towing a boat and I know that I will be reaching these Rpms while towing. Any Thoughts!!!!

Have a good tech with a scanner go for a ride and have him scan & read knock counts along with all other data. Its possible you have knock sensor problems. You should not have any spark knock if everything is working OK.

I would agree with redvette except I would add that you likely have carbon build up. We see it often. Truck runs great on 87 oct then it gets some miles on it so it begins pinging. Owner moves to 89 octane and it corrects the pinging for awhile then it rtns. The owner moves to 93 octane and once again the pinging goes away but later rtns.

 

The carbon in the combustion chambers does two things. 1) it increasese the compression which automatically increases the Octane requirements. 2) It acts like a glow plug, becoming glowing red in the comb chamber and actually ignites the fuel before the spark plug has a chance to. The pre-detonation (pinging) is the result.

 

If it is carbon in the combustion chamber, you can try adding Techron for a tank or two. Not the Chevron Fuel Injector Cleaner "with Techron". I mean the full strenth stuff. It will cost you about $10.00 for a 20 oz bottle. Run it at 1 oz per gallon and run the tank close to empty and then do it again. If this does not correct it you likely do have a sensor problem or you will need to have the upper cylinders cleaned with a Motor Vac or BG machine. Some people use Seafaom and it is a wonderful product and we sell an ocean of it every month. However, IMO, The Techron is better for cleaning the comb chamber and valves.

Run some Seafoam through the booster vac line and PCV line. These trucks are good about sucking oil back through the PCV hose and barfing it into the intake mani. All that wonderful oil gets burned in the chambers and caked onto the piston crowns and everything else. If you yank the intake manifold off and peek at the intake runners youll see what every 4.8, 5.3, 5.7 6.0 looks like with fairly high mileage and no catch can.

 

PRETTY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Not from my engine. Im running an LS6 valley cover and AMW catch can. Catch can has a few tablespoons of oil I empty at oil changes.

Jared, I have heard the term "catch can" before but really do not understand what this is or how it works. Can you explain further?

 

 

 

 

Its a small can that hook in-line with your PCV hose before it hits the intake manifold.

Its got a stainless mesh on the inlet side being the top fitting. The incoming oil laden air strains through the mesh catching the oil. When enough gathers in the mesh it drops down into the sump of the can. The AMW can has "stepped" internal sides to keep the oil from climbing and being sucked back into the engine. Overall they do work. The AMW has increased in price considerably. I got one off LS1Tech cheap. Thats the only reason I have it.

Thanks Jared. This makes perfectly good sense. I am going to look at my pcv lines and see if I have any oil at all in the line. Is there anything else I should be looking at? I do not mind adding one to my 5.3 if I need it but do not want to add it if I don't.

Not a problem. Just check the hoses. See if anything just flat drains out or if they are wet. If your really bored, yank the intake tube and TB off. Then look into your intake!!! Itll be a nasty brown in there.

 

Another thing you can do is switch to the fixed orifice PCV valve. It just has a small hole in it versus the pintle a normal PCV valve has. This was GM's supposed "correction" for the oil consumption issue.

It has the fixed orfice PCV. I was going to change it when I bought the truck and brought one home from work. I pulled the old one and when it did not rattle I thought boy this thing is plugged with only 40K? Well it was not plugged, it simply had nothing inside it, it was a fixed orfice design. I am not loosing any oil now but as you said it could be a small amt pulling back through the lines. I will check them when I get back home in a few days.

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
