sheet metal

How many of you think the sheet metal on the 99 and up chevys and gmcs is way too thin. The metal on the bottom of the box is like paper. The metal on my 87k10 was way thicker. kind of makes me mad when you spend this kind of money on a truck.

Thats the only thing I dont like about new rigs, the sheet metal around the bed is too weak. Not like the old chevy's. I think we know why its thin but why can't they compramise? Thin metal in places where it doesn't matter and thicker where it does.

I installed some tie downs on my bed rail and there is no way I could have done that with my old 98 dakota or a new chevy as the pull from the ropes would bend the rail badly. Also the bed is strong, hardly any dings and its a 74. Another hoot for thick metal.

Today's trucks really have me disappointed in terms of their quality.  They just can't stand up to work off the nice flat paved road.  Sure, they may have these nice inflated power numbers, but what good do those do when you're hauling stuff off road and your sheet metal bends into awful shapes?  I completely blame all this stuff happening on the urban society getting into buying big trucks for no good reason at all other than they "Hey, look at me" factor.  The fact that GM says you can't use crossover toolboxes without adding their little brackets to the bed pretty well sums up the quality of the HD beds.

I think that one day we will see ads saying "New, Thicker Sheetmetal!!" instead of "New, More Horsepower!!".  At least I hope so.  I don't think that you could go with any thinner sheetmetal than what we have now on these trucks.  I mean it is THIN.  Just to see how weak it really is, just grab the lower portion of the fender behind the rear tire (above the exhaust pipe)  You could easily bend it with your hand.  I would gladly pay 1-2000 dollars more for a truck that had metal as thick as my 1972.

I don't believe that.  If that were the case, why would they care, and how would many even know?  The toolbox/bed problem was/is definately an overlooked problem though.  Someone just wasn't thinking, I guess.

Just a way for GM, or any other manufacture, to save some money, I think.

Possibly for losing some weight to claim better MPG.

I do agree they are thin though.  ???

I agree that they are thin and they suck! :D What do yall think about the new Pro-tech boxes for the Chevrolet? i wonder if they will bolt right onto the old trucks. Anybody know??  ???

I actually saw a Pro-tec in person and wasn't too impressed.  I really wished I had gotten one of them until I saw it in person.  If you looked down the side of the truck the sides looked all wavy....kind of a predented look to it.  It was a black truck so that did make it worse.  I would be just as concerned about mounting a heavy (70lbs w/o toolbox) headache rack or a heavy toolbox on one of these plastic boxes, and the sides already looked dented, so I didn't really see what the advantage was.

I have never seen one just read about them and they sounded pretty good. But i was thinking about a Saturn the whole time I read them! :D

After seeing a protec up close at the auto show I think the concept is right there, but it seemed really flimsy.  Don't get me wrong, I punched the side of the bed a few times just to check it out (followed by weird looks from other show-goers).  But, the bed side just seemed like it flexed way to much.  Would that stop me from buying one... Heck no.  IMO all GM vehicles should be like the saturn w/ the panels that don't dent.

But, the reason that the S/M on all vehicles gets thinner is for production costs.  What's the easiest way to lower the price of a vehicle?  Cut production costs.

    • New to diesel trucks. I happened to find my oil cooler leaking oil externally with only 4,000 miles on the truck. I didn’t realize this was an issue until I started researching it. Dealer is going to replace it under warranty but I’m wondering if there’s anything GM is working on to fix this issue. I’ve heard the oil filter used is the same as they use on their V6 motors and that’s what is causing the problems. Should I switch to a bigger filter or keep using the OEM recommended?
    • So, GMCustomerService:  Judging by the Update History pictured above, is this truck missing any updates that it actually needs. If it's just for the infotainment system, the radio is working fine and no trouble with SeriusXM. and Android Auto is working fine wirelessly with my phone. Some months ago, an update notice was sent to my truck. I approved the update and it finished saying that the update was successful, but it seems that whatever that update was, it didn't actually get installed - at least not if I'm to go by the Update History shown above.   So, again, are there any updates that this truck really should have? I've checked with my dealer but they're reluctant or commit to anything and if I want them to check, they require a $200.00 fee just to check it out and then I'd have to pay for the actual update(s).    Ignorance is bliss, and if none of the updates goes to fixing any mechanical discrepancies, I'll just leave things as is.
    • Hey everyone, I recently had an issue with my 07 2500HD GMT900. My DRL’s stay on at all times. Right front turn and right mirror turn signal indicator stay on solid at all times. By “at all times” I mean the only way to make them go off is disconnecting the battery. I tore the headlight assemblies out, tried disconnecting the harnesses to eliminate bad wiring at the harness, I unplugged the headlight switch, no change and the mirror turn signal still stayed on. My first thoughts were : Bad bulb and/or socket somewhere, under hood fuse panel bad, bcm bad, tail light or trailer wiring problem, or some random short to power in the harness.  Possibly a bad ground but unlikely. I had a big clue in the fuse panel, it had a burnt smell. I started pulling every fuse that had to do with DRL or right turn/park lamp. Nothing made the right directional turn off but pulling the DRL2 fuse made the DRL’s go out.  After studying wiring diagrams, I found that both problems had that fuse panel in common, the bcm also controls both problems but knowing the fuse panel had a burnt smell I removed and disassembled the fuse panel and found a little corrosion on the printed circuit board.  I ordered a new fuse panel from Amazon for like $260. When it arrived I installed it, and put everything back together, the problem was fixed. I figured the fuse panel needed to be replaced anyway so that was a logical place to start. Hopefully this story helps someone in the future. Regretfully I didn’t scan for codes before I did everything.
    • That stinks. I’m sitting on the side of the road right now with the same issue. Never had an issue before taking it in for the ground strap recall. Now I’m outside of warranty and they’ll probably want $200 just to diagnose what they already “fixed”.
