Phoenix Arizona in February

I'm packing up the baby and the kids and heading for Scottsdale so my wife can be seen at the Mayo Clinic. We're heading out there on February 2nd and we have appointments on the Monday and Tuesday following.

Anybody have any good recommendations on where a family can stay and maybe have a little fun without spending a fortune? There's lot's of choices but not to many bargains like there were in August when were there last. There's lots of resorts for $200+ a night!

(Side note: Yes, you can leave a 1999 Suburban idling with the A/C running while it's 116 Degrees outside and it won't overheat -- but it's close!)

Thanks!

If you don't mind too much of a drive

Marriot's Residence Inn Phoenix Airport

2 Bedroom, 2 Bath suite $159per during Feb 2-Feb 5

Free breakfast, high speed internet and parking

That's without any discounts, try calling them direct for discounts (doesn't hurt to tell your story as to why you'll be there...throw in bringing all the kids when telling the brief tale)

801 North 44th Street

Phoenix, Arizona 85008 USA

Phone: 1-602-273-9220

Fax: 1-602-273-7221

Also check with the Mayo and ask them if they have any discounts available

It ain't no Six Flags, but it gets you on the other side of the city

Castles N' Coasters, I-17 (Black Canyon Highway) and Dunlap

Plus it's adjacent to a mall.

I've idled my truck several times during the summer 110+ while reading a sunday paper, 25 minutes, never above everyday 210. The tranny does climb from 150 to 200 though.

Outstanding!

Can you believe I've been to Metro Center dozens of times since 1988 but I've never set foot in the Amusement Park there? (I met my wife not too far away from there even though neither of us is originally from Phoenix.)

Thanks for the advice. We'll wave when we drive through Tucson!

Might try the Ronald McDonald House. I took my daughter for some Hyperberic Oxygen Treatments in Winter Park Fl and there was a McDonald house there for great price and families in the area bring food in for dinner for the families that stay there. It's no Hilton but a safe place to stay if you need to save some cash.

You might try the Westin Kierland which is in Scottsdale close to the clinic or maybe the Pointe Hilton at Tapatio Cliffs. Both are very nice resorts and will be at the upper end of the price range but both have very nice family pools and water slides which I belive are heated.

Your sidenote does not count because Phoenix gets nowhere near 115 degrees in february. The weather should be perfect! Have fun!

A while back I brought the family with me to a Microchip conference at the Westin Kierland and the family vacationed while I attended events all day long. The kids lived at the pool and generally had the times of their lives. Among other things, my daughter couldn't get over ordering lunch and being served in the pool! It took a few weeks to bring them all back down to reality.

During the summer we had been staying at the Pointe Hilton Squaw Peak because I was able to get very good rates through US Airways Vacations. In fact, we were staying there for about the same price as the Marriott on the Mayo Clinic grounds was charging. Right now the Pointe Hilton Squaw Peak or Tapatio Cliffs are $239 or so a night. Squaw Peak wasn't perfect, but we enjoyed ourselves a bunch for the $100 we spent per night. Somehow it doesn't seem like it's worth the higher price.

I might consider giving them a call, but I kind of feel like there must be people worse off than we are that should be there instead. It's funny how you can go through some tough times and feel like your suffering, but you never need to look too far to see someone else who you wouldn't want to trade places with.

If you don't mind to drive I would stay in Mesa, or Tempe. You can save some money staying there instead of Scottsdale. You may not get all the goodies at some of these other hotels but for the money you save you can do a lot of other things, Phoenix Zoo was great the last time I was there. You didn't mention how old the kids are but if they are a little older you can find quite a bit for them to do around there. I am some what of a star watcher so we would go to Kitt Peak in Tucson and I think it was free to tour the telescopes. Hope this helps.

Hey There, I used to live in the area next the Westin Keirland and it is a great area. That Resort Rocks, Spent lazy afternoons floating in there river. If you search North Scottsdale for Hotels you can probably find some of the beaten path for cheaper, the Westin will be around 250 to 400. A good place to go in N. Scotts is Crackerjacks, they have bumper boats, driving range, batting cages, arcade, and it isn't all that expensive. Castles and coasters will be a ways away. There is a lot of stuff to do around there and isn't hard to find. Good luck with everything.

Just wrapping up the trip. Thanks to everyone for your advice.

I got a special rate at Country Inn and Suites on Shea for $100 a night which was pretty darn good. Got a couple of room-temperature evenings so the kids went swimming in the outdoor pool.

We went to Castles and Coasters and it was decent. Considering the fact that I was last in there almost exactly 20 Years ago, it's in amazing condition. It isn't Disney Land, but it was very good for what it is.

Tomorrow we'll find out about all of the test results before we drive home six or seven hours.

Thanks again!
