An uncle and me talked about the tires, then got sidetracked and I said that I would put 18" rims on with 8.5 inch depth. He said that it couldn't be done because of the rubbing against the fender well walls.

Now, I don't know whether to believe him or not, because sometimes he's full of it; Like, don't get directions from him, he'll send you a different way. And so on.

Any suggestions?

Um...what size tires are you going for? I know a guy that has 20x9 inch rims with low profiles and he doesn't scrub at all,and his truck is fairly low. His truck is a 2001 silverado 2x4.

Recommended size for tires on the 18s I wanted were 265/70-16

Um...that size tires won't fit on an 18" rim.

That is a 32" tire you are looking at, I am not sure how much scrubbing that will do because I do not know how low your truck is. If I could find out what size tires his was I will post them back up.

Have you considered wheels this size?wheels

Note: A slight suspension lift may be required :)

Your input is useless. Don't post something that detracts from the thread's meaning. (Don't mean to be a backseat moderator, but it's an annoyance and it's aggrevating.)

You still sour about having two differnet sized tires on your truck?

to the best of my knowledge you shouldn't have any rub problems with that tire since it isn't much larger than the new factory 17's

There are two things to consider here:

1. Overall tire diameter being about the same as that of the original tire, which is obviously done by using an 18 inch tire with a lower aspect ratio.

2. Rim width. Keep in mind that the same tire can be mounted on a range of rim sizes. As an example, I'll use an LT 31X10.5/R 15 tire. It can be mounted on rims 7 to 9 inch wide. This is according to the tire fitment manual that tire stores use. My Nissan pickup originally had 31X10.5/R15 tires on 7 inch wide factory rims. There was no rubbing, but the truck had adjustable wheel stops and these were adjusted to permit less than full turning of the wheels, thus giving the truck a very wide turning radius. So, even though the tires did not rub, some compromise was necessary ,i.e. wider turning radius. And they used the narrowest rims they could for these tires at the factory. If they had used a 9 inch wide rim with the same tire on this truck, I am convinced it would have rubbed against the inner fenders.

A 4x4 Nissan Pathfinder with off-road package used the same tires/wheels. But the front suspension had less travel than the truck, so Pathfinder owners complained of occasional rubbing of the tires against inner fenders when off-roading.

My advice is, if you want to avoid rubbing with larger tires, get the narrowest wheel that will safely accomodate that size tire. You may be able to use 8 inch wide rims. 4X4 trucks have higher riding height, so it is always easier to make enough clearance for larger tires. Also, torsion bars can be cranked up easily and suspension raised. This luxury is not possible on 2WD truck versions.

I do not think GM trucks have adjustable wheel stops like my Nissan truck had. This was a nice feature, as it allowed limiting the turning of the wheels to prevent rubbing with oversized tires.

Okay, advice taken.

Though, those 18x8.5 inch rims that I wanted to fit, and the recommended tires were 265/70-16, would they be able to fit?

Okay, I had an idea some day earlier, and I wondered if I kept the 255/70-16 up front (new rims), and set the 265/70-16 in the back (new rims), would 255's be able to wrap around those 18x8.5 rims?

first of all..... a 265/70-16 is a tire designed for a 16 inch wheel, you would need something that reads xxx/xx-18

if you have 4x4 you need the tires to have the same diameter, which means toying with aspect ratio if you want wider tires in the back. to find out the diameter of the tires you want to use here is the conversion

say you have a tire 265/70-18

265 is the width of the tire in millimeters

70 is the aspect ratio of the sidewall, 70 meaning the sidewall is 70% of the width.

this tire would effectively have a sidewall width of 265*.70 = 185.5mm

double the sidewall width since the total height of the tire includes 2 sidewalls.

take this number and convert to inches, then add 18 for the wheel, this is the height of the mounted tire.

I know the Saints really S*** the bed today but you don't have to be such a grump. Besides I got a chuckle out of his post.

    • Looking for advice from this group. Took my flawless 2020 6.2 TB to an unnamed shop for routine rear brakes and oil change. Tech forgot to put oil back in after the full service and needles to say, destroyed my engine.  It’s all on their shop video so they are responsible.   I had my Chevy dealer do the analysis and they confirmed its compromised and said engine replacement. The manager said they only get GM reman engines from GM with full 3 yr warranty and the one they would put in is not same as what’s they are swapping out on 21-25 for recall.    I am looking for advice why that would be a different engine because obviously I had the good 6.2 year and replacing it has my concerns with that recall for 21-15   Also what’s the pros and cons of accepting the engine swap vs telling the shop that bricked the truck to pay up so I buy a new truck. I’m concerned about stigma resale eventually if I just decide to get rid of it after the swap or other issues showing up after the swap out.
    • Just looked up my records.  I've never gone over 5000 miles between oil changes.  At 46K miles, I have 10 oil changes.  I hope that will help.  I also installed the disabler last year.  I've still had a few times when it didn't seem to engage (which I can tell because the start stop feature kicks in), but for the most part, I think it's working.  For some reason, GM did not include the number of cylinders running in the information screen like I had on other models.  In my Cadillac, it shows me when it's running on 4 cylinders on the fuel milage screen.  I can't find that on my '21 Denali.
    • you might read through the info on gmupfitter.com for your truck, to find a good power source.
    • Melling I believe is/was the OEM on the lifters who explored this problem some years ago. The white paper they generated on the topic indicated two items of note when I read it. 1.) They only fail on the switch. Prevent the switch, prevent the failure. 2.) The majority fail due to deposits messing up the timing of that switch. Anyway that's what I got from it.    Mine have always been active, 195K+ now, and my oil maintenance is surgically clean.    Of course this assumes good parts. That is no heat treat issue or machining flaws. I get comfortable that these issues are in the rearview mirror by about 30K. IMHO naturally.
    • Yes, the key seems to be with the half tons that if it has the Z71, then it definitely has the two speed. What got me was that the two speed AND the lower geared towing package option could not be chosen together the last few years unless it was mated up to the 6.2. Want the 3.0 duramax and 3.73 tow gears ... nope, can't get the two speed transfer case ( neighbor son realized that after he had bought his used 3.0 half ton .. where the frick is the low range ? ! ).    I am still unsure which truck series, the half ton or the HD truck that the original poster is referring to for sure other than yes his question is in the HD section of this forum but that doesn't guarantee the question got asked in the right section.
