Fuel pump wiring harness?

I have a '96 GMC Sierra 1500 with the 5.7L V8. I tried to start it the other day and it would turn over but not start. I noticed that I couldn't hear the fuel pump operating like normal so after trying a few things I had it towed to a local shop. They diagnosed the fuel pump as bad and I agreed to let them replace it because I don't have any other choice at the moment.

Unfortunately, after dropping the tank they found that the "fuel pump wiring harness" had shorted out and the harness needs to be replaced. They claim the part is $350. I'm not sure if they are feeding me a line, and either way the price seems a bit steep. Does this sound reasonable?

Thanks,

Lorne

haha, that is insane. I have a 1994 model with the 4.3 and likely as not the pump is the exact same pump. You can buy the entire assembly with pump, wire harness and new brakets at your local auto parts store for about $250. I bet the harness is about 50 bucks if even.

If its me, I would tell em to go to h-e-double hockey sticks. The easiest thing to do is take the truck home, buy a case of cold beer, invite about 4 buddies over and have them help you pull the bed off. It's about 4 bolts as I remember and it comes off fairly easy. Once you do that you'll be able to get right to the pump. It's pretty easy once you get the bed off.

However be sure to take note of how its wired, and test your fuel gauge before you put the bed back on. I didn't do this and my gauge hasn't worked in about 3 years :banghead: .

Let us know.

Well, unfortunately my truck wasn't close enough to home and that kills me because I'm a DIY kind of guy. It turns out the harness they mentioned was actually the Fuel sender kit. It definitely fried the wiring harness and the sending unit. I checked a few online sources and it looks like it would be at least a $250+ part. Ironically, the dealership actually charged a decent price for the fuel pump and strainer kit but they wanted full retail for the sender kit.

Here's what really pisses me off, GM doesn't sell the pieces of the Sender kit separately. All that really needed replaced was a pair of plugs and a short wiring harness but those parts weren't available without buying the kit. If I had the truck at home I probably would have tried to re-wire the sender myself. After playing with the old sending unit, it appears it's dead as a door nail though so I would have joined the no-gas-gauge club too!

Thanks for the input!

Yea, this spring I was planning on swapping sending units. I'm really wanting my gas gauge back.

That sucks about the parts. I'm pretty sure things are sold seperately though auto parts, but I guess if your hands are tied to dealer than your at their mercy. That's gay.
