i was going to put a transmission filter yesterday because my truck wouldnt go into drive only reverse and i found metal shaving in my transmission pan somebody please help

Depending on how much metal shavings and the size, it might be normal (wear from the gears and bands). If your trans is acting up, however, then it's probably an abnormal amount of shavings and you might be looking at more serious issues.

would it be worth it to rebuild it or just get a new transmission?

change your fluid and trans filter. If it starts acting up buy this transmission stuff called SLICK 50. It will fix the problem like a bandaid Temporarily, It could last 2 days or 2 years. unless youve got a extreme problem.

If you can justify the extra cost, it's much better to go for a new one. You might want to get a good look at the extent of the damage before you do anything though.

Be wary of "new" trannys. The previous owner installed one in my old 88. When it went after 40k miles (80k-120k), I took it to my neighbor's shop. When we tore it down, we found parts that were supposed to be in the 4.3l setup, specifically the sprags and clutch packs were tiny. VERY weak. We built it with big servos, big sprags etc. The cost difference between rebuild and build up (for strength) is really pretty small. Finding a reputable rebuilder is key, but for essentially the same money you can have a nearly bullet-proof trans. You don't have your truck or mods in your sig, but if you are going to or have already started to add power parts and drive hard, consider it seriously. Also, get a trans cooler if you don't already have one, heat kills 'em.
