Unknown-Very Strange

2001 GMC Sierra 1500 4.8, 2 wheel drive, automatic, ext cab. 80K miles

 

This truck is doing some very strange and very concerning things right now.

1. When starting the engine, the starter motor will continue to run if I leave transmission in P(park). It will try to start again, while the engine is running, when I put it back in P

2. The P R N D 3 2 indicator is not allways correct. Once I am in D it is true, but any other position and it goes haywire.

 

For the near future while I try to figure out what to do, I have been turning the engine off before I get to P, I dont want to tear up the starter.

Bad ignition switch?

 

I had a problem with my Silverado where when I started it, occasionally the PRNDL would not light up at all until I put it in gear, and when I did put it in "D", it would start in 2nd gear. But if PRNDL did light up on starting, it was fine. It turned out to be a bad ignition switch.
