Brake upgrades

A lot of folks have reported good results upgrading to Praise Dyno rotors/pads. I think the stock parts are pretty good. I got 60K from my first set of brakes and that includes about 10K miles with the 9000 trailer in tow. When I redid them last year, I decided to stay 100% stock and hopefully will get another 60K. No complaints about stopping distances or rotor warpage either.

I dont have a problem at all with the factory brakes, its just that when the time comes to change I figure I may as well upgrade. Thats what I do with everything I possibly can once something needs replacement.

i like wagner thermo quiets. ive used them on my other cars and certainly will on the truck when it comes time. they were recommended by my gm mechanic.

I've got to do something to mine... They squeak like not other. If you have the window down and you come to a stop its just ear piercing. The pads are perfect, but I think I'm going to try getting the rotors cut and maybe new pads.

On other websites, they swear by Power Slot rotors and Hawk performance pads. I replaced my rear with the power slot cyro rotors (frozen rotors) and green Hawks. So far so good. No squeaking and no more dust than factory. I couldn't tell much in improvement though. I'll do the same to my fronts when they wear, but I'm at 115k right now with no signs of it coming soon. :loser:

Guys, any new opinions on this? Since I added 285's, the brakes could use a boost too. They work fine, but I have to press the pedal harder. Has anyone upgraded their brakes with success? The posts above don't seem to excited about anything in particular, plus this topic doesn't look to have come up lately.

 

I know that upgraded rotors/pads/lines are key, but any certain brands, combinations recommended that you have tried or installed?

has anyone found any decent brake upgrades for 3/4 Gm trucks with the stock 16" wheels??

I have a 03 2500HD and I have a large camper which pushes me past my gvwr. I upgraded my suspension to handle the load, but my brakes left something to be desired. So, I was in the same positon. Stock or aftermarket?? I did some internet research and found that slotted rotors with performance pads were the most cost effective option, with the best performance. I ended up buying Powerslot rotors with Hawk Super Duty pads. I also bought Russel braided brake lines. Loaded with camper on it made a big difference. The only thing about these pads is they squeek once in a while. I think it is because of dust build up in the brakes, after hard braking or lots of city driving. A good rinse with the hose and they are quiet again. When shopping around I found this web site had some good deals http://www.buybrakes.com/ also Summit racing had all the parts too. Powerslot makes 2 versions of the same rotor, one fits the 2500 and the 2500hd, the other fits the 2500hd and the 3500 fleetside. If you have the 2500hd, get the 8691 part #, they're thicker and will last longer before warping. Hope this helps.

The only name I see that sticks out is SSBC. All other manufactures require a larger wheels to fit the bigger calipers.

Dean, did you change out all 4 wheels or just the front?

 

Slotted rotors tend to be better than drilled from what I can see. I hear that drilled ones really eat up pads and should stay in NASCAR unless you want to change your pads all the time.

 

Draenor, have you used SSBC stuff on your truck? I've heard (I hear a lot of stuff as you can tell) that stock calipers are plenty enough with the right pad/rotor combination...

No I haven't. I am running the same size tire as you, but have not noticed any increased braking effort. I just done a bit of research on a possible upgrade. Baer, Wilwood, and the like have nice brake setups, but require bigger wheels. I'm not ready to upgrade wheel/tires yet, as I just purchases a set or Revo's.

Yes I did all 4 at the same time. From the reading I did slotted are better for our apllication.

    • Thanks; I looked there a few minutes, and I think I can find something. I really never looked there, as I thought it was stuff like PTO/aftermarket bodies/accessories like snow plows.
    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
