Stupid Question?

Recommended Posts

I have a GMT-900 w/ the 5300.

The description in the brochure says "4 speed transmission w/ overdrive". My buddy is telling me that my truck should be a 5 speed then since it says "w/ overdrive".

I'm not feeling 5 speeds when I drive, and wasn't aware GM made a 5 speed. So I have do have a 4 speed...right?

Warned ya it was a stupid question.

Also the 6000 specs just says "4 speed". Doesn't mention overdrive.

Thanks,

It used to be a big selling point a long time ago (probably when dinosaurs roamed the earth...lol) that a transmission came with overdrive when they didn't commonly come with them.

Just assume these days that everything has overdrive even if it's not mentioned. Some transmissions (I think GM's new 6 speed) even have 2 overdrive gears (5th and 6th gear).

IIRC, "overdrive" is any gear ratio less than 1, like 0.7 for 4th gear in our 4L60s and 4L70s.

1st - 3.06

2nd - 1.63

3rd - 1.00

4th - 0.7

In the 6L90 6-speeds, 5th and 6th gear are less than 1.

1st -4.03

2nd - 2.36

3rd - 1.53

4th - 1.15

5th - 0.85

6th - 0.67
