Just wondering what they did to the engine to make more power in 2000. Found a beautiful 1999 with low miles and great price. I want more power (who doesnt) Need something more effecient than my 454. Just wondering if it is something I could do by getting the computer programmed or what. Thanks

There are TONS of things you can do with the 99-00 trucks to get more power or more percieved power.

Tuned ECM by any number of Companies (I like and have a wester's)

Cold Air Intake (I like the Volant)

MAF Sensor (i'm thinking about getting a granatelli)

Synthetic Oil (Mobil1 is what i use)

Adjust Gearing (never done it)

Corvette Servo's (coming soon)

The list goes on and on, Try searching around here, there is always alot of discusion about it.

Also keep your tires inflated.

DO NOT swap MAF or even descreen it. Waste of $$, believe me/or not.

Yes, you can get your pcm tuned (dyno tuning) or swap for a mail order tune, better yet, get an '02 PCM and tune it for your truck!

What would the benifit of getting an '02 pcm and then having that get tuned be, instead of just getting his existing pcm done? Is the actual pcm faster or have more memory?

There is some part of the newer PCM that fixes issues in the 99-01's. I have an '05 and honestly didnt pay attention too closely.

The things to start with are:

CAI

Headers

Exhaust/mufflers

Tuning

If you click on my sig you can see what i did, step by step on page 2.

GM didnt change the PCM for 99-2006 as far as speed so changing the PCM wont help just the programming changed along with other internal changes.

The OEM MAF Sensor will support 8.1L engines and a larger one is a waste of money.

There is a thin line to balance to get more HP & not hurt fuel economy.

Larger exhaust will hurt economy.

The OEM fresh air intake is infact a cold air system and all you gain on a aftermarket is noise.

A tune will help performance & economy some but the real improvement is to go to someone like Jesse @ http://www.wait4meperformance.com and have him dyno it for max results.

I agree, dont swap MAF and the best tune is a dyno tune but not sure if I agree on the gas milage part of your statement. With my mods and tuning if I lay off the boost and just cruise like a normal human being I'll get 19-21mph highway. :withstupid:

A more efficient engine is going to make more hp.

Well if you make the exhaust too efficent the fuel economy goes down so like i said its a fine line between HP & fuel economy.

The 99-00 computers were bad about showing false knock, thus pulling timing ALOT.. I went from a tuned 99 pcm to a tuned 02 pcm and I was amazed at the difference.. the 02 pcm has a little bit more memory as well so more can be done to it..

trever is right on with the maf thing.. swapping it or buying a "performance" one is not beneficial in any way.. actually makes it harder to tune.. If your making enough power to mess with the stock maf then you need to go to a speed density tune..

As far as i know the horsepower ratings for 99-00 was 270. In 01 i think it was rated as 285. From what i am hearing it was just tuning. But maybe there are other changes as well.

I believe if you search previous posts you'll find that there was a camshaft change in 2001 on the 5.3s'. I believe the cam has the same grind as the Corvette camshaft from 2001.
