A/c Problems

My 03 hd gasser's a/c is acting strange. If I start the truck up sometimes the ac blows cold for several minutes then starts to get warm, then all of the sudden it will get cold again. The compressor is cycling on and off, I have not put guages on it yet. IT seems to be worst if the truck has been sitting, and then cranked up it will get cold if I drive a little bit, but will blow warm when first started. Any help would be appreciated!

Try replacing the a/c cycle switch on the side of the dryer.

Thanks,

Is this something that can be done in the driveway or do I have to go to the stealer?

You can do it yourself, it has a valve under the switch, so just a little freon will escape, just unplug it and unscrew it.

You should get a set of gauges to check it 1st. Harbor freight has a decent "home grade" set on sale for 39.99

Like every other part of diagnostics, you have to be able to read or measure to make an educated guess. If your pressure is good with the gauges, you can temporarily jumper the switch to see if that fixes it. If not, you are not out of the $$ for the part. Easy check is large(suction) line should be cold and sweating, small(pressure) line should be HOT to touch. If these conditions are there, pressure should be close and you can jumper out the low pressure switch on the accumulator/dryer.

Also is the airflow good from the blower, if airflow is low, the coil can freeze up and will go into a defrost type mode by turning compressor off.

Just my .02 cents.
