Need New Water Pump And Other Stuff

Recommended Posts

I have a 2001 Suburban with 107K on it. Seems the water pump is weeping so I need to replace it. Figured I would replace the hoses and the serpentine also. Do you all have a good place on line to buy such parts?

thanks

Just buy those parts at your local Carquest or something. Just make sure you use Fel-Pro gaskets.

Charlie, I cannot help you with a recommendation for an "on line" supplier as we (CARQUEST) sell only through our stores. We find it almost always works best due to the complicated nature of what we do and the vehicles we deal with.

I would offer a word of advise. Be sure and use a new water pump as opposed to a reman unit. I would also recommend you be sure who makes the new pump and be sure it is an OE equivalent. Not all "new" pumps meet OE Form, Fit and Function. Sure they are new but they may not be the equivalent of OE. Ours are supplied by ASC a division of Airtex and they meet OE specs in Form, Fit and Function.

Be sure and change the thermostat while you are in there.

I would also recommend that you complete a thorough flush at the time making sure you do so with the rear heater on so as to flush the rear core as well as the rest of the system. What few new pumps we get back as warranty typically have seal damage due to contamination.

One last thing. Electrolysis is a real issue in most all late model vehicles. This is because the coolant flows through Iron, Alum, Plastic, Rubber etc. We sell and personally use a product from Lubegard called Kool It, part # 96001. This product is desinged to help keep your system cooler but more importantly it will eliminate all Chemical Electrolysis in the system. I would recommend you add one bottle to your system as you are refilling it. We recommend it and sell it with almost every flush, waterpump, heater core etc job. It is also recommended in writing by Modine, the leading supplier in radiators and heater cores.

Thanks for the info. I had never heard of Carquest before, around here it is just Autozones, which I have had bad experiences with. That is why I asked about online. I just looked up your website and there is a Carquest store in the next town. I will run over there and check it out.

thanks again

Charlie, I appreciate you looking us up and although I do not know where you are located, I hope our store takes good care of you. Although I would hate to send you to NAPA, you can trust the brands they sell as well. They use many of the same suppliers that we do and in most cases you will recieve a part that matches OE in Form, Fit and Function. The problem comes with many of the Retail "box" stores. They do handle some quality products and then some of it is not anywhere near OE quality.

In my town we have Carquest, napa, autozone and advanced auto parts. I have the best luck with Autozone. They always have the part at a fair price and they are great as far as quality. Napa is selective about what they carry, limited in stock, lots of times they need to order stuff. Autozone and advanced are lower quality and the personell turn around seems very frequent.

Fingers too fast. I meant I have the best luck with CARQUEST.

Whew!!! You scared me for am minute. Glad to hear they are taking care of you.

I try not to "sell" on this forum and do my best to not beat up on our competition, but sometimes there are obvious quality differences.

My local CARQUEST knows my voice on the phone as I have done business with them for years and the same guys there for years. They offer good parts and a good tip when needing parts (like what else to get).

Are Fel-Pros better than ACDelco or OEM GM?

For some applications, and this is one of them. Use the metal ones they look like this:

Thanks for all the info. I will use the Fel pros and go to Carquest. Yes,we do have a NAPA, but it is tiny. They never have anything in stock and it takes them forever to order things. I live in preppy Northern Virginia where hardly anyone does their own vehicle maintenance. So it is hard to find a "real" parts store that stocks stuff and has people that know something.

thanks again
