Fuel Filler Neck Flapper

Recommended Posts

I recently purchased a 2007 GMC 2500HD Classic. When I filled the gas tank for the first time I noticed the spring loaded flapper/baffle in the fuel filler neck hole was missing. Did GM purposely omit this item in the assembly process or did the one that may have been there fall into the tank? Does anyone out there have a 2007 GMC with the same issue? I've seen them in the 2006's.

None on my wife's 07 Tahoe either. GM is probably saving 1.2 billion dollars this year by ommitting that one piece. :banghead:

When you think about it though, you don't really need it. The only time I take my gas cap off is to fill it, so nothing should fall in there.

It's not for things falling in, it's for things coming out. It's to reduce evaporitive emissions.

Subject: Info - Elimination of Fuel Filler Tube Flapper Door #06-06-04-006 - (01/30/2006)

Models: 2006 GM Passenger Cars and Light Duty Trucks

2006 HUMMER H2, H3

2006 Saab 9-7X

Attention: The flapper door located in the fuel filler neck has been eliminated on the current Buick LaCrosse (Buick Allure, Canada Only) in production. This change will be progressively rolled into the other GM products listed above. Do Not attempt to change the fuel filler tube because the flapper is not present.

Recognize the fuel filler tube flapper has been eliminated and address any customer concerns.

Don't unnecessarily replace the fuel filler tube.

New Metal Fuel Filler Tubes Without a Flapper Door

A revised style of fuel filler tube has changed materials from plastic to metal construction. On plastic fuel filler necks, the metal flapper was included as a safe discharge point for static electricity. With the metal style of fuel filler tube, the entire neck serves as the static discharge point making the flapper redundant.

Important: Do Not attempt to change the fuel filler tube because the flapper is not present. Replacement fuel filler tubes will not be equipped with the flapper.

Thanks to all, especially MS3DALE, for clearing up an issue I thought was a factory discrepancy.

The flapper has nothing to do with vapor emissions. There's typically a drain hole just beneath it as well.

I have a metal filler neck AND a flapper.

When they brought out unleaded fuel, any vehicle that had a flap had a metal fill tube as well. Back then the wivestale was it was there to help prevent siphoning. It did not prevent it. Made it hard to get the hose back out, but did not prevent siphoning. Also cannot see how it could possibly prevent splashback, it is pushed out of the way by the nozzle. I did notice however that my truck will spashback if I continue to fill at full speed after it clicks off the first time. I now just quit at the first cutoff. It is not like I am shorting myself, I only pay for what I take.

It's best not to top off anyway. After doing this regularly, you may find yourself replacing the evap valve canister

I'm glad I read this. I have a 2010 Silverado. This morning when I filled up I noticed my flapper was missing. I thought it was stuck inside the tube. So I called my dealer and set up an appointment for Wednesday to have my flapper fixed. Later I checked my wife's cobalt and it's was missing too. So now I'm guessing that my truck just never had a flapper. My old truck (1990 Cheyenne) had a flapper, and the trucks at work have the flapper. Thanks fo the info. I can cancel my appointment!
