Chassis Grease - 3 Questions

What type/brand grease do you use on your chassis?

Do you jack up the front to take the weight off the suspension before you lube, or does it matter?

For those of you with a 2007 GMC Sierra Classic 2500HD Ext. cab, how many grease fittings did you find?

I use the mobil 1 synthetic grease, but any decent grease will work.

I don't jack up my truck, it wouldn't really help any. The only thing I do sometimes is turn the wheels to each side because it makes it easier to get to the lower ball joint fitting.

It should be the same as the past ones if it's a classic, 11 total zerks.

I just switched from John Deere Grease to Mobile 1 synthetic. The Mobile 1 leaked red liquid all over my bench. My garage is insulated and gets pretty hot in the summer but this grease shouldn't break down with heat should it.

Now I'm all confused??

Mine does the same thing. I always see drops on the floor and think I'm bleeding! :banghead:

I've been thinking about changing for the same reason. I normally order amsoil stuff, so I might try a tube of theirs.

I have the dealer do it when he changes the oil. It is a bargain for the money and is documented every time it is done! No mess or old oil to get rid of and no reason for me to crawl under the truck!

I've read/heard that a lot of the oil change shops are NOT doing the zerk dance anymore. It seems that with frequent zerkin', the boots get blown out or grease just is everywhere because this zerking' person is pumping like it has never been even whought it WAS done 5k ago and the zerkin' person's job is to grease those zerks with no concept or concern or common sense.

I never take my vehicles to the quick lube places. They are 100% dealer serviced all the way down to the tire rotations and state inspections.

jthe idea of jacking up the front end comes from trucks with king pins. You dont have them. I do jack mine simply because I fit under better. I grease twice as often as I change oil. I change oil (Mobil 1) at 5000 miles and grease at 2500. easy to remember and track on the odometer, even for the wife. You wont need a lot of grease like one guy was saying. 4 to 5 squeeses usually does it. some pushing out of the boot is ok but you dont want to blow the boot off caus it will allow water in later. If youve been driving in the rain a lot or in water you might notice water coming out, then whitish grease, then clean fresh grease. Thats a good thing. pushing the water out is more important than worrying if your boot is perfect. I use High quality NLGI 2, high temp commercial grease. Brand might not be important as many lubes are just relabeled anyway. The good stuff is for heavy equipment or mining. Outside machinery subject to heat and water. This type of grease shouldnt drip like liquid but if you over grease of course pure grease might be bleeding out. It also hangs in there in rain and wont readily mix with the water. Frequent small grease jobs are more important than high dollar grease. This is my opinion based on 23 years in the trucking buisness without one single lubrication related failier of any kind. 3 trucks of my own with well over a million miles between them and 7 years driving company trucks hauling heavy equipment to job sites and in off road conditions. I always took the responsibility of greasing myself. No grease monkey is going to put the effort in to make sure all fittings are greased properly. they wipe grease on the fitting with their finger. Dealership, quiky lube what ever. If you care enough than at least one grease job per oil change should be done by you. Some fittings just suck. They will not get grease if you dont do it. Also you will be familiar with the bottom of your truck and if something is breaking you just might find it before it screws you.

I found one strange fitting on my 07 2500 HD, very hard to reach up above the steering links on the passenger side. It looked like some kind of dampener. Cast aluminum cylinder kind of thing with a zirk. it appeared to have different grease in it. any idea wht that is?

I just use Valvoline all purpose grease every time I change my oil. On my '99 C2500 I think I have 12 fittings, counting the slip joint in the drive shaft.
