Auto Tranny/transaxle Service For 95 Bucks?

Okay so today we get a coupon from our dealer. Here's what it all says on it...

Auto Trans/Transaxle Service $95.95

-Drain and refill the transmission/transaxle w/approved fluid

-Adjust linkage if applicable

-Install ACDelco tranny/transaxle filter and gasket

-Check tranny/transaxle operation

Sounds to me like it's not a tranny flush, all they do is drop the pan, put in a new filter, and refill back to full. Still have old tranny fluid in there.

Good lord...I can do all that for 40 bucks or so. Or am I missing something - is this a full flush/filter/refill?

I had mine done for just over $100. They drain about 4 to 6 quarts I believe, change the gasket inside the transmission, new filter and reinstall everything. But, yes half of that price is labor. From what I have heard though, sometimes getting the pan off is a real pain and an even bigger pain if you don't have a drain plug.

You can't always do just flushes. At some point in time you should go in and replace the filter. I recall 100k miles is a good time to replace the filter, but I'm sure someone will say that is too long to go.

That's not a bad price just because the parts alone would be about $40-$50, but I would then follow it up with a flush to get the rest of the old fluid out.

The newer vehicles come with Dexron VI which is a synthetic tranny fluid. I think you can probably let the new fluid go a lot longer between changes, but I haven't yet decided on my interval. On the last truck, which I towed with, I was flushing the tranny over other year (~30k miles).

Just did my 04 K1500 yesterday. Here are the costs...

drained trans fluid, it took 5 quarts of Dextron III when all was said and done. At $2/quart you are at ten dollars so far.

Filter was from GM, it cost $39. Now you are up to about fifty total.

Transfer case took just under two quarts of the autotrac II blue fluid. If you don't have auto 4x4 it uses Dextron III. For the blues stuff, it was $10/each, $20 total. Total so far for just parts is $70.

You can probably get a better deal on the filter at Napa. You might save $10-15 on the filter.

It was a very easy process. Drain plug in the trans oil pan saves a lot of mess. You do have to remove the shift linkage cable, and bracket (it takes a Torx bit, and is not easy to get to). Filter comes with gasket. Top off the tranny with 3 1/2 quarts and start checking it on the dipstick. Mine took right at 5 qts when I was done. Transfer case is a piece of cake, drain plug, then fill until it runs out of the fill hole.

Hope this helps....

If you're going to change your filter, buy two 8mmX1.25 bolt about an inch long to replace the ones on the shift cable bracket. After you f**k around forever removing those awful torx bits in that awful spot, you'll appreciate being able to make it easier for next time.
