Then and now

This is how our home place looks now, taken in late 2001.

This is how it looked after a tornado nailed our farm in 1941. This is the house.

This is the barn in red in the first picture.

Nobody was hurt, even though it looks as though no one could have lived. My Grandpa, Grandma, and two of my aunts were in the kitchen as they had no time to get to the basement. A pole from the barn was sent between them, missing them all by inches. Damages to the house were estimated at $20,000. :0

They were aweful lucky JP......I was confused at first...wasnt sure if those were pictures of old houses hit by a tornado or NEW houses built by the Paco Construction Company.

Yes, correct....I also thought I recognized Paco in the picture. Isnt that him in the black dress doing the jig on the front lawn??????????

Now I think you're confused, Newbie. That person doing the jig is able to walk upright, and you know that is not one of paco's abilities.

That is cool to have a historic perspective of your house.

Holy crap JP, I just noticed that a bunch of the "fench posts" in were torn up in that picture from the tornado damage. Was the barbed whore all tangled up around the fench posts?

Newbie, I assume that paco does everything with a "hanger", so that was definitely not a good excuse! ;)

It is kind of spooky. Almost every year it seems as though storms come through on the day that happened. Fifty years to the day after this happened we had to take cover in the basement because radar said a tornado was indicated about a mile from our house.

We are still digging up stuff from this. Three years ago I found a doorknob in the lawn, I don't know how many pieces of dishes or silverware we've dug up. Heck, when we dug the basement for the addition we put on we found two feet of chimney!

At least you have somewhere safe to go! Unlike those places that can't have basements because of the high water tables. I'd think more about moving south of here, but I don't think I could handle not having a basement.
