I just wanted to give a sincere thank you to all the guys on this forum who've helped me learn alot about my 99, 01 and 04 Silverados over the years. I think this is one of the most patient and helping forums of its type on the net.

This past week I shopped a 4 yr lease with GM on a Z71 Silverado crew. (I even tried with Ford too) But as of Saturday morning I became an 07 Toyota Tundra owner-Crewmax TRD. (No flame please) Those of you who know my posts know that I'm pretty much a live and let live person. I really wanted to stay w/GM or at least with Ford. But both were over $110 month higher on trucks with a MSRP of over $4K less. I always joked on here the only thing keeping a TRD from being a turd is "u" I guess that makes me a turd now. Anyway, I hope you guys will still allow me to hang around. I still consider myself a GM truck guy and don't mind sharing what I've found out about the other guys.

Anyway I do appreciate everything you guys have done and best wishes.

I hope they gave you an extra cam to go with the new ride! :) I hope it serves you well and good luck!

:cheers::confused::):tear::nono::cry::(

I did just the opposite, moved from the Toyota Tundra camp to the Silverado camp and couldn't be happier. I had the previous generation Tundra and can not say that I am not much happier with this Silverado. I still go onto tundrasolutions and see that they have many 1st gen aggravating problems, hopefully you have good luck and don't run into too many of these. I have to admit though, if it weren't for that frame (bed bounce is horrific to watch), I would look into them for my next truck; I love the way they look with the steel bumper and tow mirrors.

Well keep us posted on how the new ride works for you. Obviously most if not all of us have a GM at one point or another and your insights on your experiences with yours will certain be of value to current and future members.

The Silverado is a great truck and I was nothing less than satisfied with all of mine, but most especially the last one. There are lots of things that I liked better than the new truck. some are better with the Toyota. The 5.7 is a very strong motor (BTW I got a free cams for life deal with the truck :) ) Bought bumper to bumper through 60K miles. And the 6 speed tranny is smooth. There are some pita issues with the Tundra too. The new tire monitoring system required by the government seems to be a little ridiculous. You even have to reset the system after a tire rotation. (I guess all mfgs will have to deal with this though.) I understand the skid plate is almost impossible to remove and that the oil filter is nicely located to where it's impossible to change without removing the skid plate. The filter on the 5.7 is a cartridge system not a spin on. Big filtering capacity, but different than anything I've ever dealt with. Also calls for 0W-20 oil (or 5W-20). There are a few things in life where thinner is better, but we'll keep this a family show, but oil isn't usually on my list for that. With $3 gas my wife insists that I keep my foot out of the gas and the mileage has been good so far. I guess I can thank the 6 speed and middle age for that. The interior is not as nice as the new Silverado/Sierra, but it is nicer than my old Z71 the Tundra has heated leather... old truck didn't, Crewmax has enormous back seat room, etc. So it's a step up for me. I did feel a little better when I saw it was 75% North American content (even had an Interstate battery from the factory) but am still feeling a little guilty for not buying American. Again I expect to be back with a Chevy/GMC one of these days, but in the mean time I'll keep you guys up to speed on the new beast.

You wont need the cams for life after they rip apart your brand new truck and replace the entire engine with one that works right. :D:loser:

Grats on the purchase.

I did like how the seats were softer in the Tundra, it seemed to me they tryed too hard on storage all the little nooks and crannies, now were'd I put them **** sun glasses this time? It looked like it would work great for a lot of little things but bigger items were lost, like a large flash light. I only sat in 1 though.

Lease 4 years/60K miles. That was the deal killer for GM and Ford. The residual values were nowhere close and Toyota had a special rate for returning customers. (My wife had a Highlander once upon a time.) As I posted above, my local Chevy dealer did everything they could to put me in a new Silverado, but even with about $1400 in GM card money the best they could do was $105-110 a month higher. I was trying to free up some equity in my old truck.... just built a house and sometimes you have to do what you have to do.

As posted above there are a lot of small storage spaces. I got the front bucket seats with center console. The console is huge. Might be a storage compartment for replacement cams? :D So far so good. Ill keep everybody posted.

You consider yourself a GM guy but you bought a Toyota? Huh? That makes you a Toyota guy. Even when the domestics make a better product (as with the new GM trucks and the Ford trucks being superior to Toyota's flexi-framed, lower safety rated, plastic-fanstastic interior-ed, grenading motored, and trout exterior styled new Tundra), there will still be those who will rationalize away their defection from the home team.

    • Thanks newdude!  By the time manual selection is needed, I'm probably too much of a control-freak to depend on the transmission sensing braking to activate automatic downshifting.  I would be anticipating the situation and already be manually downshifting.   This truck replaced a 2004.5 LLY diesel with the Allison 5-speed.  Putting it in T/H made noticeable differences (when the torque converter locked, upshift points, downshift behavior).  On this 2024 gasser with the 10L1000 I haven't been able to detect much, if any, difference.  Ok, I can never tell now when the torque converter locks up.  But I also don't notice differences in shifting.  For downhills, I've probably already manually downshifted by then anyway.  Since it's also more awkward (than the 2004.5) to engage/disengage I don't even bother.  Or maybe it doesn't really matter with just a 3k lb. camper in the bed?   Thanks also for the list of reasons the charging system might select various voltages.  However, what I am seeing doesn't fall into any of those categories.  It very definitely, and very consistently, rises after coasting/braking.  Maybe not immediately, but not very long after coasting/braking.  Very consistently drops voltage when no longer coasting/braking.  It might also be interacting with the camper battery charging (I might disconnect the camper and see if it changes the charging behavior).  I also need to recheck turning on headlights for when I want to force it to charge the camper.   Another JR, in June I converted the camper to LiFePO4.  Since it's not a good idea to try to charge lithiums directly using truck, I installed a Victron Orion XS DC-DC charger (which BTW is AMAZING!!).  Being cheap, I only had to buy that one item (besides the battery, of course) to do the conversion.  The camper OEM 120v battery charger (only 19 years old and works perfectly) and the truck feed the input to the DC-DC charger (not at the same time).  But I didn't want the camper charger feeding back to the truck so I kept the old separator.  I considered replacing the separator with a 30amp diode but that means more work and might add another 1/2 volt drop.  One thing that surprised me was the voltage drop over the long 10awg wire run, so I can only charge smoothly at 8 amps (because the DC-DC charger is completely configurable).  Another reason I don't want an added voltage drop with the diode.  I might also be a little lazy but all this work is being done under the sink with a small cabinet opening.
    • apparently CA smog is (or at least was)  checking that the vehicle is using the oem and/or a ca smog approved tune, so I expect you'll fail inspection doing it.
    • yes, leaking exhaust will mess up o2 sensor readings, which in turn messes up fuel trims.
    • 286,740 Mile Services   8/6/2026   New AC Compressor. Refrigerant oil and dye, evacuate and charge system.  New exhaust system from cat back.  New Iridium plugs plus replace #3 coil Repair/rewire headlamp wiring (passenger side) and replace all forward bulbs. Polish lenses of both assemblies.  Pull rear rotors, clean and adjust parking assembly. Inspect, clean and grease front calipers. Check pads and shoes.  4 wheel power bleed of brake system. Dot 4 Reset idle speed 50 rpm higher New Serpentine belt.    Will need new pads in the rear in about 5K more miles.    Tax Title and License out the door just short of a grand.    AC clutch had bitten the dust. 1 year warranty on the pick and save replacement. Thing will make a Polar Bear cry Uncle.  He spent quite some time on the wiring. It was in the harness and he does nothing half. I got off cheap. I have considerable more light down the road. Sylvania Silver Star replacements.  Gas seal between the porcelain and shell of plug #3 was blown, cooked the coil. That was the cold miss.  Love the new exhaust. I can sneak into the neighborhood again.  Nice to have a working parking brake again. Belle Tire never got it done. That was disappointing.    This was one of her bigger bills and still way cheaper than a payment even given the oil consumption. This thing cost me under a hundred a month in repairs and normal routine costs. What is my incentive to replace it? 🤔
    • hello I recently bought a 2012 gmc 1500 with a 5.3 and have a AFM disabler on it I'm interested in doing a cam but I'm worried if I remove the AFM system I will fail smog does anyone have info if they are able to detect that or a work around to it (not talking about hot smogging) please let me know thank you
