Engine Cut Out

i have a 97 full size truck with the vortech 350, everything is stock. i am having the engine cut out at cruising speed for sometimes just a second to once in a while maybe 3 seconds. it never stalls just cuts out and right back on. i have done a complete tune up plugs, cap, rotor, etc. it seems to be happening when it is raining out. the other night coming home in a hard rain it was real bad now a few days later it has not happened once. I am thinking it must be electrical. has anyone else had this happen to them?

What brand wires? Are they pressed on real good? Ditto for the cap.

when you say cuts out and not stalling I really don't understand. you mean you hit the throttle and nothing happens but the engine is still running and all the electrical devices work or you hit the gas and the engine revs but doesn't move? Anyways check your battery cables for corrosion and make sure they are tight. I fix alot of vecs with multiple driveabilty problems because of the batt cables. check the ground on the thremostat housing make sure it's clean and tight. While the engine is running hit the fuse box under the hood with you fist (it's next to the master cyn.) and see if that duplicates the issue. the best thing you can do is see if there is any codes stored in the pcm because that would be the best place to satart. good luck

Interestingly enough, I am having a similar problem.

 

Last night my wife called on her way home and said the engine was "cutting out" and died ("check gauges" life came one). I asked my son to drive it around the neighborhood today while I was at work, but it would not start.

 

My initial thought is fuel filter (can't remember last time I changed it and it has 175,000 on the truck) or pump. (The first thing I told my wife was to check the battery cables when she got home - tight and clean.)

 

I am leaning away from the pump because my thought is that the pump fails or does - meaning it might quit pumping and the truck would die, but that it doesn't generally work "sometimes". (Of course it doesn't hurt that the fuel filter is cheaper and easier to change than the pump and it probably wouldn't hurt to change it anyway.)

 

There are no codes stored, so am I at least thinking reasonably logically?

Sorry if this insults you....but you did check to make sure there was fuel in the tank right...not just what was reading on the gauge...

 

Could very well be the pump though...turn the key on and listen for the pump to make its start up hummmmm. If you hear that...its a 99% chance its not the pump.

the OP was having a problem with moisture...3 years ago...the guy that resurrected this post didn't say anything about moisture...and his engine died...not stumbled.
