A/c Off, Compressor Still On?

When I bought an 05 Frontier, it bugged me that the compressor stayed on even after I turned on the A/C - resulting in decreased mileage. I'm curious if anyone knows if the compressor stays on with the NBS 1500s (SLE1 with auto climate). I tried to look/listen for it (rpms) but can't determine.

 

Anyone?

I am not 100% sure about the NBS but the compressor on my 02 only runs when the air is on or the Defroster. I am prettys sure this still holds true.

oops...I meant to write, "when I turn the A/C OFF" - oops. So say I have the A/C on and then I turn it off but keep the fan on, is the compressor still running? I could tell in the Frontier with this harder working, higher revving 6, b/c I could hear and see the rpms shift. when I would turn on/off the fan completely. It was an odd characteristic - an a big complaint in the Nissan community. But the more I look around (at least with auto-climate control systems) the more prevelant this seems to be (ie I think my wife's Toy Highlander does the same thing).

 

I know, "what's the point?" I guess in the end there's nothing to do about it, but knowing might influence how often I switch on/off A/C...in conserving what will probably only end up to be .0042 mpg's.. :)

Turning AC off and having in flow through vent will not make AC go on unless you have in defrost mode. This applies to all GM products.

In my 04 Sierra, the compressor runs when I turn on the recirc button and have the actual AC button off.

When my compressor was failing it made a tapping noise. I thought it was the blower since it only did it when the blower was on. When the compressor finally failed and the refridgerant leaked out the tapping went away since the compressor will not run without it.

I would say that the compressor runs when the blower fan is on.

The only time your compressor will run is if you have a/c, recirculate(which is still a/c), or defrost

on. Turning your fan on without running any of these will not turn on the compressor and as soon as you shut one of these off the compressor will stop.

      I can only guess as well that something was clicked on that brought you to the half ton choices by accident. By all means try again and chose the 3500 and sort out that its the cab and box configuration you want and choose four wheel drive ( rather obvious to have a transfer case ) and to make sure the dually isn't chosen. I find or at least did a couple of years ago when I was sifting through the options that it would sometimes jump ahead after choosing the series of truck and in this case 3500 and skip some of the other initial configuration choices and have to watch the heading bar and sometimes back up by choosing the first in the series of option break downs. I think sometimes the computer will remember items that were last chosen and skip over the first part. Anyway go through it all and depending on the trim level chosen and I think the LT is one that may fall into that where the option of having the 4 high auto transfer case can be chosen, where as a High Country doesn't show that option as it just comes with the fancier ( not necessarily better though in terms of potential problems ) transfer case but for sure both transfer case choices are equipped with high and low range in the HD truck segment. Like Newdude said who works at a dealership, its the half tons that are the ones that will come with the single speed unless certain options or trim levels are chosen that add the two speed transfer case but as your looking at an HD, you don't have to worry about that hot mess.    One item that at least didn't show up and not sure if it does yet or not in the HD options on the manufactures pubic website is the upfitter in cab switch option if one is desiring that. Unfortunately its not wired in at the factory but the panel with the switches is on the dash but the wiring harness to be installed gets tossed under the rear seat to be installed by whomever after the fact to complete the installation.

      Yesterday we brought home a 6yr  old Havanese dog from a nearby SPCA.  We've had her for 24 hours and we are delighted with how well she is adjusting to her new home.  It  was a huge decision to adopt a dog at this stage in our lives but we believe we made the right choice!   it was reported that her first 6 years were ones of neglect.  I think she's already realizing her life is going to get a whole lot better...  so is ours!

      No doubt, I definitely agree with you. However, considering the 6.2 and 3.0 have been catastrophically failing with very little miles, I figured I would put trouble free. I’m at 18,4xx and still not a single issue.

      It’s never dry here but it gets hot. My 4 vehicles I keep at home drive an 18 mile loop. One 6 days a week. Two about 3 days each and one once a month. Only one goes on trips about 4 times a year 1000 to 2000 miles each time. One 26 years old gets driven once a month for 22 years. One 14 years old goes 6 days a week. The other two are recent at 2 and 4 years. All are performing normal no extra service other than that would be half of recommended or severe service in the maintenance manual. No extra water or steam out the exhaust or premature plug wear. I would consider an 18 mile loop would be enough. So apparently once a month at 18 miles for 22 years has kept the collector car running well. About 45 minutes a month.
