Gm's Vs. Newer Import Trucks

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

My dad is in the market for a new truck. He's been a GM man my whole life, and all of his before I was around, but he's seein the Titan's and Tundra's commercials and stuff with their better power and what not. Have any of you guys with maybe a tuned 5.3 or 6.0 (basic bolt on's...exhaust, new pcm or tuner, intake) ever run a Titan or the new Tundra's? Have any friends with them that you could make a decent honest comparison??

If your Dad is looking for pure HP and quickness, the new Tundra cannot be denied. The Titan also has a very strong motor. However, HP and Quickness alone do not make a REAL TRUCK.

IMO, he has to look at the entire package and if he does, his choices will be narrowed down to two, the 08 Silverado or the Sierra. The Interiors of the Datsoon or the Tojo cannot compare to the GM trucks. The Datsoon has been plagued with small issues since it was introduced although I am sure most of them have been corrected. It is my understanding they also love gasoline, and I mean really love gasoline.

The Tojo is having some engine issues in the area of camshafts in the 5.7. I am sure this has been corrected as well. I have also read issue with frame bounce due to their new and improved Triple Flex, excuse me, I meant to say Triple Tech Frame.

For me, it comes down to a responsibility issue as well. I am just not going to own a foreign badged vehicle. This rubs some people the wrong way, but it all comes down to what you want to do with your money.

I might add, if you want a really unbiased opinion, wait until Norseman chimes in here. It is very hard to get him to open up concerning American Vehicles but sometimes he will. :driving:

Hey!!! I resemble that. Yea, buying a Auto from Tojo is the most patriotic thing a person can do. :driving: I just spent all day interviewing new consultants and I'm tired so, I guess I'll just let my signature speak for me.

Trey, we need to grab lunch soon.

i think everyone has to seriously look at all five big competitors. i believe right now the best truck on the market is the GMC and the second best is the chevy :driving: next best would be the titan i really am actually a nissan fan (i dont care what other people think) after that its a race between ford dodge and toyota. the best GMC package is the sierra denali if your ok with a crew cab short box that is...its got 400+ HP and its basically just as fast as the tundra stock. you also have to consider the fact that in the testing the only way they could get the tundra so quick out of the hole was 4 wheel drive (6.0 0-60) the denali not far behind did its time without 4x4 engaged. then again its all what you like most the denali is spendy the yo is cheaper. imo the gmc vmax is the best deal

He plans on purchasing a truck based solely on horsepower and torque? What about ride and drive, durability? Dependability? (Yes there is a difference between those two.)

I have a friend with the older tundra. Its an 05 model. He absolutely loves it. He had the Borla exhaust put on it and larger tires at the time of purchase. It almost sounds like an old 5.0 mustang. I think your dad is just going to have to go drive everything under the sun and than make a decision, but if it comes down to looks than the new tundra is definitely out of the running.

I guess when I posted the original I was in a little too much of a rush. I didnt mean to make it sound like my father will be trying to buy the fastest stock truck on the market. He of course wants the total package. He works at a chemical plant with about an hour drive each way (highway and Baton Rouge traffic), we hunt and fish, so he'll be loading fourwheelers in it, towing a bass boat, all that good stuff. Between his friends at work, they own the full spectrum of today's fullsize trucks. I'm not sure if any of his buddies have the new body style gm's, but I think he got turned away from going with a gm again because a lot of his friends had transmission problems (along with some other stuff) pretty frequently. His friends with the Titans and the Tundras havent seemed to have problems yet (although he is aware of the tundra cam or crankshaft issue). So I was just curious as to what pros and cons ya'll have heard or seen on each. And dont worry, he will test drive everything before he buys one (some of you guys crack me up). Thanks for the replies already

If it's in the budget, try out a new Duramax equipped truck. They are very quiet, get great mileage, and the re-sale value will cover most of the initial cost of the diesel. All the new vehicles are very reliable (except fords :nono: ) So it comes down to what brand and how ugly (Toyota) or how cool( :driving::cool: ). Good luck.

Truck Comparisons

i had a titan for 3 years...i've had the 2500hd gas nbs for about 2 months now...so far, the pluses for the titan are--more responsive and powerful engine (unbelievably, the titan gets my 7000lb boat moving quicker and runs at a lower rpm at highway speeds then the chevy), ride (of course, comparing 1500 to 2500 isn't very valid), gas mileage (14 vs 11), sound system (titan rockford fosgate out performs chevy bose) and interior storage (overhead compartments and deep door pockets).

pluses for chevy are interior finish, bed length (hate those 5.5 ft beds!), seat comfort (crappy fabric on titans)....

overall, i'm very dissapointed with the power of my 3/4 ton chevy compared to the half ton titan, but very impressed with the interior finish and it's a bad a** looking truck...
