10 Tips For Fuel Efficient Driving

Recommended Posts

I work at a dodge dealership (dont worry it's only a summer job untill i have to go back to college) in charlotte, nc and picked up a brochure about fuel efficiency. they're kind of common sense but i figured i'd post them anyway.

1. Following the manufacturer's suggested maintenance schedule is the best way to ensure that your vehicle is operating at maximum efficiency.

2. Don't speed. Gas mileage decreases rapidly at speeds above 60 mph. Each 5 mph over 60 equates to an additional $0.15 per gallon of gas.

3. Avoid excessive acceleration - speeding, rapid acceleration and rapid braking all waste gas and curb mileage by as much as 33% at highway speeds. Sensible driving is also safer for you and others, so you may save more than gas money.

4. Use cruise control to help cut fuel consumption by maintaining a steady speed during highway driving.

5. Avoid excessive idling of your vehicle. If you're going to be stopped for more than 10 seconds, turn your engine off - unless you are in traffic.

6. Ask you service advisor to have your suspension and chassis parts inspected for misalignment. Bent wheels, axles, bad shocks and broken springs create engine drag and are unsafe at high speeds.

7. Use your overdrive gear to lower engine speed, save gas, and reduce engine wear.

8. Combine trips; car pool and plan ahead to cover the shortest route possible when running errands.

9. Avoid packing items of top of the car. It creates wind resistance and can decrease fuel economy by 5%.

10. Limit hauling heavy loads. An extra 100 lbs. in the trunk of your vehicle can reduce fuel economy by 1%-2%.

Getting a job with a take-home vehicle is a + too. I only fill my truck up, on average, about once a month :driving:

Kinda hard to lay off the go pedal when these modern trucks are just 60's muscle cars with bigger frames and a bed attached.

OR... just screw mileage, accept the fact that you have a gas guzzling V8 in a big heavy truck, and drive however the heck you want! :)

But honestly, I have really tried those common sense type things before... go easy on the throttle, coast a lot, etc. But the difference is so small it's just not worth the trouble.

Newbie question but curious so here goes: do TB spacers help at all? PO of my truck installed one and he says it helped immensely with MPG and throttle response... I haven't seen many pro-TB spacer comments on here though!

which leads to: does it hurt to have it? should I remove it?

TIA! :)

TB spacers only work on wet systems like a TBI, Dry systems 96 up are SPI and no fuel goes through the induction system.
