Oil Burning 2007 Nbs 1500

Yup, the topic says it all. It's a 1500 crew cab 4x4 with the 5.3L "M" engine. At 2500 miles I'm down about 3/4 of a quart. At cold startup I've seen blue smoke at startup too.. Gas mileage is also down to 13 city. After several tanks of 17-18 mpg highway I'm now back down to 15.4 mpg on my last 280 mile trip.

Anyone know what is acceptable for oil useage on a NEW truck? It now has 5840 miles on the odometer.

Thanks.

so are u saying u have over 5k miles on original oil or u noticed u lost some on your original but have changed since? Kinda scares me now b/c I have 2k miles and never checked the oil!!!! OOPS!!! Did u check it the day u rolled off the lot? Maybe it was low the whole time? Mine is only getting 13.1 mpg so dont feel bad...The "M" engine is the aluminum right? Thats what I have....it's in the middle of the VIN somewhere right? I have no "J" in my VIN

I wouldn't be surprised if it did use a little oil while it breaks in, especially on the Al motors. Takes a while for the rings to seat. It will probably get better as it gets some more miles on it. What was the usage 2500 - 5000 miles? More or less?

You have changed the oil at least once by now haven't you?

Do a accurate test. first change oil, get a good reading at the same spot when cold, then check at 2500 and 5000 mi. if you haven't already, you should always do a few full throttle runs. blue smoke at startup means leaking valve seals, this is can be fixed fairly easily by the dealer under warranty.

ps: my new 6.2 in 4K mi has not burned any noticable amount on the dipstick, and i have worked it hard a few times already. i am a believer in working engines hard to their max once and awhile.

I changed out the orriginal oil at around 3300 miles and it was down to maybe the 2nd circle on the dipstick. I then put in Mobil 1 5W30 and set it to the full mark. I checked it yesterday and it was down to the last circle on the dipstick, which I figure is 3/4 quart low. I have not added yet, as I don't have any Mobil 1 on me. Will do so tommorow, and will monitor the useage over the next 2500-3000 miles.

I plan on going by the oil life monitor since I'm running Mobil 1. Also, the color of the oil is still very clear, which is a nice thing to see with 2500 miles on the oil. I'll probably pull a sample at 7500 miles and send it in to BlackStone labs and get a report. If all is doing well I'll continue to use the oil life monitor and check back with them every 20k miles or so.

Just remember that engines dont get fully broke in until 11-12000mi, my 01 Vett took all of that and now does about 5-6000mi to a qt my 04 Sliverado is about the same.

take it to the dealer, youve got the 100K mile warranty

either way if you guys are burning oil or you arent checking it right, You always have to be on a level surface.

It might be that you are using mobil 1 so early in the engines life. If the rings hadn't seated fully yet and you did an oil change for synthetic it's going to take them longer yet. At least from what I've been told from many different people, which could be heresay, synthetic oil will result in longer ring seating time.

Rings are generally seated within the 1st 100 miles of an engines life, if not sooner. Also, MANY, MANY new GM vehicles come with synthetic in them staight from the assembly plant. 3300 miles is more than enough to break in, and seat anything that needs to be seated.

Maybe I'll sit and hold the engine at 6k rpm for several minutes to help things set it.. :puke:

Yea...that sounds like a good idea. Why not give that a try. :puke:

GM has a Service Bulletin about knicked / damaged valves, causing oil consumption.

You most likely have damaged valves, because you said you see blue smoke (oil) on cold-start.

Take it to your dealer...and you'll probably be getting a new set of cylinder heads.

This is just my NSHO, but I am going to say that something is terribly wrong. An '07 should not be burning oil nor should "blue smoke" appear. I am thinking rings, maybe valves. Could be as simple as a computer issue, but the better part of valor says to take it to the dealer and evoke the "100K" powertrain warranty on it.
