First Warranty Service Today

Well, here's the story on my first "issue" requiring a warranty repair on my new truck. I have heard this is somewhat common on the NBS 6.0's. Just giving you a heads up.

About 2-3 weeks ago, I was poking around under my truck and I noticed a few small drops of oil on the bottom of my engine near the Tranny bell housing, near the oil filter and also near the starter motor. Not much, not even enough that it dripped on my floor, but enough for me to notice. I wiped it off and called the dealer to see if they any info/insight on this and to see if it was common or not. I decided to wait and keep an eye on it and see if it reappeared after wiping it off. Well, on Monday, I crawled under it again and sure enough, it reappeared. So I called the dealer and made an appt for today. I brought it in this morning and they calle dme at 3:00 to tell me it was all fixed. They replaced the oil pan gasket and the gasket for the manifold where the oil cooling lines enter the block. Evidently I am not the first one with this issue, so you may want to keep an eye out for this. Fairly painless trip and I got a free oil/filter change out of the deal, plus a wash too. They even gave me a brand new Pontiac G6 to drive to work and back.

Keep an eye on the leak !!

I worked on a 07 Tahoe about a month ago...the torque converter cover area was soaked with some type of oil. Found a TSB from GM on the condition...turns out the torque converter shaft had a rough finish, which caused premature wear of the torque converter seal. Thus, a trans fluid leak.

Updated converter, new torque converter seal.

Man, I've worked on a TON of NBS trucks...I really seriously doubt you had an engine OIL leak. I'm really thinking you had a trans fluid leak.

Let me get the bulletin number...be right back.

Whatever you do...KEEP AN EYE ON THE AREA !!

VMax,

If you DO have an actual trans fluid seep / leak, you'll want GM Document 1848158. It covers the updated trans parts.

I also found a TSB on leaking Rear Mains.

Can you go under your truck...and take a picture?? That would really help out! Also, don't forget you have a removable inspection plug at the bottom of bellhousing area, which would greatly assist you if there were any leaks.

At our GM store...on Trucks, we NEVER do pan gaskets!! It's always something else generating a leak.

Pretty sure it was engine oil and not tranny fluid. There was enough to tell it was yellow/brown in color and not red. It all smelled like motor oil and not tranny fluid. Also, some exposed areas on the milled surface that the cast pan mounts to did have a film of oil on it in places, well away from both the tranny and the rear main. When I called on Monday, the tech guessed valve cover and it was running down the backside of the engine as he has seen that too, but upon further inspection, I quickly dismissed that theory. After looking again, my guess was oil pan.

You can bet I will be keeping an eye on it. Pics now would not do much good as it's clean as a whistle right now.

I hate to say it, but it is common. 2 of the 4 brand new GM trucks I have purchased have had one or more leaks of oil and transmission repaired under warranty. This is also common with the other manufacturers as well (I hear Fords are notorious for leaks).

Whenever you buy a new vehicle, always watch for leaks like a hawk. Never hesitate to get the leak fixed under warranty even if it is just seepage as some can be very expensive to repair outside of warranty. Also it is quite common that they do not repair the leak the first time (i.e. end up replacing the wrong seal). I make it a habit to inspect the vehicle for any signs of leaks whenever I change my oil.

I had a 2000 S-10 that was at the dealership 5 times for oil leaks. They replaced the oil pan gasket, oil filter mount, oil cooler lines twice, and one other oil leak related repair but I can't remember the location.

My 2006 Sierra had the transmission pan gasket replaced for a leak at 11k miles. That one I'm keeping my eye on as I'm not convinced it was the pan gasket.

Thanks for the post. Leaks is one thing I can not stand, nothing worse than a puddle of oil on the garage floor.

Will be keeping an open eye on this.

Nice Regal!! What size is that? I almost bought a Regal 2000 a couple years back.

Thanks!, just had it up near Brainerd last weekend, but usually spend most of our time on the St. Croix/Mississippi.

It is a 22' with the 5.0L 260 HP. With just me the 2 dogs, half tank of gas and smooth water it does 52 mph by GPS. Well made boat, in my opinion it is just a step below a Cobalt, without the Cobalt price.

I agree, I'll take the Regal and the cash please.

Coincidentally, I had mine up in Brainerd last month too (Craguns on Gull Lake), and I usually put in on the St Croix at St Croix Bluffs park, between Kinnikinnic and Prescott, sometimes I put in at Hubs in hastings.

Mine is smaller though, it's a Larson LXI190 with a 225HP EFI V6, 4 blade 22" pitch SSTL prop. My top speed (by GPS) is 58 on smooth water.

I had an oil pan leak on my 5.3 as well, at least that's what they said it was the first time. Come to find out it was a leaking rear main seal. They got it right the second time around though.

Daddy,

I am pretty sure it's my rear main as well. I have not seen the oil reappear around the pan where I saw it before, but I still see a light film collecting at the bottom where the pan meets the bell housing. I am keeping an eye on it for a week or so, then it'll be going back to get a rear main seal. I'll keep posting on it.

That is the exact location.

Nice boat, plenty of power, that SS Prop makes a big difference.

I usually go to Cross Lake and stay at the Army Corp of Enginers Campground, fun place with plenty of boating.

I never tried the St. Croix Bluffs ramp, how is it and is there plenty of parking? We usually put in at the Windmill Marina in Afton, but at $25 a launch it is getting kind of spendy.

Update:

The oil leak is not fixed. I now suspect the rear main seal. It's going back in next Monday. I'll post an update when I know more.
