Why Is My Frame "gunky"?

This morning I slid under my truck to check out the skid plate, and how things were set up down there, while doing so, I gave the frame a couple of knocks, and the black paint rubbed off on my knuckles....upon closer inspection, I realized the whole frame is covered in a black frosting-like material that can easily be rubbed off.

 

Is this normal? Why is it like this?

did your dealer sell you one of those 'underbody sprays'?

 

my frame is black in mine .. but it isnt something that rubs off ... what color is it under the 'frosting'

I've got the same on mine. I believe that's the underbody coating to prevent corrosion.

I think under this gunk there's silver, bare metal color....I didn't want to rub too much off thinking there's a reason for it to be like this. I'll try to snap some pictures and post them in a few. And no, the dealer did not sell me any spray-on's.

hmmm i will double check over the rest of mine ... just to make sure ... if it is in fact the factory coating that is 'flaking' up like that ... that ain't to good ... because it will be bare metal under there...

Don't worry about it. Its a hot wax dip and has been working on GM frames for a long time

Yes, Don is correct, and the advantage is that it does not chip off from taking hits from rocks and such, it insteads "flows" back over and continues to protect. However, I have noticed where jacks and lifts contact it, it can smear it off pretty good, but I certainly am not worried about it. My 2000 never rusted or had issues, nor did my 89.

ahhh ok ... makes sense i guess ... i am just used to 'coatings' like that from dodge .. that wash off after a short time leaving the part to rust like crazy ... i checked a few more places on mine .. and i can't get it to rub off on my hands ... so i dunno

My new Silverado has it also. My hands were covered with the stuff. If large gaps in the protective coating become an eyesore, just touch them up with a spray on rubberized undercoating such as 3M.

I agree. It's the anti-corrosion coating that the frames are dipped in prior to being sent to the plant where the trucks are assembled. On a good hot day it is pretty soft stuff and will come off on your hands. Down here in Central Texas we see train car flatbeds with them piled 20 high going by regularly from wherever it is that they make them.
