Is Gm Going To Offer A Heavy Duty 1/2 In 08'?

Ford and Toyota both offer what I would call heavy halfs. GM use to offer heavy halfs years ago. But it seems that now to get a 2200 payload rating I am forced to look at the F150 or the new Tundra. I am still not sure I understand why GM does not offer a heavy duty half in a regular cab long bed configuration. They have all the components to build such a truck, but it seems that in 2007 they did not offer such a truck. In my business we have to use power tailgates and they typically weigh around 500-600#s and if the truck has a payload of only 1500-1800 pounds then once I add the power tailgate, fuel, and a driver, I am down to only having only 500-700 pounds of payload left to be within the mfg speced limits. I need a 2200 pound payload in a 1/2 ton truck, to make them fit my requirements. 3/4 tons are gennerally overkill and just cost to much to opperate in a world of 3.00 + a gallon fuel.

Has anyone seen or herd of GM coming out with such a truck to fit my Business needs???

08's are being built, and there is no heavy 1/2. I had an 02 2500LD, which turned into the 1500HD in 03. Great truck. I wish they made one too. If they're going to do it, it will take a few years to start the niche trucks, as always, probably 2010.

just get a 2500 DMAX. Good MPG, loads of power, and no shortage of cargo capacity or look at a good used 03-06 1500HD.

Currenty we have 1 regular cab long box HD D-max and several PSD 3/4 tons in the fleet. I am trying to find a much cheaper solution than buying 30,000.00 work trucks. I am triying to find a truck that can be bought and fitted with the power tagate in the 20k range or less. Right now the Ford 3060 pound heavy payload pkg half is the only option out there.

Have you looked at the reg. cab 1500HDs? Not sure what years they were available but it sounds like what you neeed. I know someone who has an 03 4x4 reg cab 1500HD

To the best of my knowledge GM only made the 1500 HDs in Crew cabs. They were really the original 3/4 ton 800 platforms that had the 3/4 800 frame and 8 lug wheels. Where if you bought a 2500 HD those had the taller 800 HD frame that allowed room for the allison transmissions. I don't think they ever made 1500 hd regular cab.

As for buying used, thats not really an option, I have over 40 trucks in my business fleet and some of those trucks run over 3000 miles per month. We buy strickly new at a rate of 15-20 trucks per year. I can't realy buy used. I buy new for what most dealers charge for used, on my fleet programs. So used is not really an option for me.

I thought that the new 1500 with the "tow Package" and "V-Max" option got you close to a "heavy half" setup? Doesn't the V-max option get you the 14both 9.5 semi-floater rear, along with the 6.0L engine, better breaks, etc?

Yep,They never made a Regular cab 1500HD,All the 1500HDs were crew-cabs.

Now they did make a Regular cab 2500LD in the GMT800 series that had a GVWR of 8600lbs.

Ford has the biggest payload of the bunch in a 1/2 ton which is 2990lbs. I don't know where you are getting that Toyota has a big payload cuz it don't. The 5.7L CrewMax only has a payload of 1395lbs. GM's Crew VMAX has a payload of 2010lbs. The Tundra's CrewMax tow rating is not even as high as the VMAX. The only one that matches GM and thats the F150. I'm pretty sure for 2009 GM is offering a new 4.5L Durmamax Diesel in the half ton trucks as well as the H2.

I thought I mentioned this a couple of times, but to be clear here, I am talking about Regular cabs with long beds. Not crew cabs with 5.5 foot beds or 6.5 foot beds as with the 1500 HD of years past. The Toyota Regular Cab long bed has a payload range up to 2065 pounds. It was in some prelim specs that it would have a 2200 pound payload but actual production spec is 2065. Hopwever at 2065 pounds its still 250 pounds more than the same Regular cab long bed GM offering. I am looking for Work trucks not SUVs with beds on them. Just a little FYI here but The Goverment treats trucks with under 6.5 foot beds like suv's for Tax purposes. So any truck with a 5.5 foot bed is not going to work, not to mention we need the cargo space of a non existant 10 foot bed , and a back seat is just useless for my business trucks.

Here is the specs I found today as of 2007 models, 2wd Regular cab long bed trucks.

Max payload ratings

GM = 1815 No optional heavy payload pkg available.

Toyota = 2065 with optional heavy duty/ towing payload pkg

Ford = 3060 with optional heavy payload pkg.

@ 2065 that is pushing it to make that work for my business needs, But the GM is just out of the running at 250 pounds less.

@ 3060 thats plenty, but I am not a huge fan of Ford 1/2 tons, they have always been pretty thursty and a little week on reliabilty and resale value. Toyota has the resale value, and the relibilty, but also a big price tag. GM would be my first choice here, but they need a heavy payload pkg for 2008.

One other thing, unless GM has made it available in 08', you can not order a v-max or max trailering pkg with any engine larger than the 5.3 in a regular cab long or standard bed. You have to go at least extended cab to get the 6.0.

I would then possibly look at the 3/4 ton models. I got a 2006 extcab 2wd with 6.0L, in the LS trim(but still pretty bare bones) for around $21,000 out the door(that is with tags, etc) back in OCT 2006. So I am sure you could find a 3/4ton 2007 Classic for around that price.

The big thing that I found is that if you get a stripped down 3/4ton you can get some good prices on them, but once the D-max/ally combos were figured in, the prices jumped into the 34K+ range. So look for a 6.0L gasser in the 3/4 ton trucks and I am pretty sure you can find one in the 20K price range(especially the 2007 classic styles). Also my truck was stickered at about 29K, just keep hammering the dealers for the price you want and you should be able to make a deal. Good luck!

It sounds like you want the toyota, so go buy the toyota, you can get all this info from the internet, or the dealer, why ask here and tout a toyota?

Toyota has resale value and reliability?? Everything I've read about the new tundras begs to differ. They're a first gen truck, so how are they proven reliable?? Considering all the horror stories constantly told about blown engines and destroyed transmissions. I've heard the resale is rock bottom at the moment as dealers are fighting to get them off the lots.

Of course, I have NO first hand experiance with Toyota myself, just know people who have them.
