2004 A/c Problem

A Friend has 2004 Silverado 1500. AC has control for each side of cab. The left

side and the speedometer will quit working at same time and hot air comes

out of left side vents. It's an 8 cyl, ext. cab. 42 k miles and 2wd.

Warrantee is out but still on for this problem as it has been ongoing....he

has had it back to dealer 5 times with no fix. This is an intermittant

problem. Taking it back in on Monday for the 6 time. Once it does this, it

will not resume normal operation until the truck is shut down for a few

minutes (no codes or any other indication of a malfunction) ....anyone know of a fix so he can tell the dealership what to

do????????(he is a lifetime Chevy man, but fed up to put it litely)

Thanks, Pete

Had a similar problem this summer, half way thorough a 4 hour trip the driver side switched to hot air but I did not have the speedo issue. Got home and parked the truck and next day everything was back to normal but I took it to the dealer anyway and they reprogramed the AC. Actually works better now then it did before the reprogram but there is no way to tell if that was the problem for sure, guess time will tell.

Thanks, DKN...guess they plugged into the computer to reprogram? I think it's a door problem and didn't think it had anything to do with computer. However, it's controlled electrically, since the speedo goes out too.....so maybe the computer is involved....Bob, the owner, is really disgusted and ready to get a new truck.

Thanks, Pete

the 2 problems are not related... has he had the cluster replaced for the speedometer? if not, replace it... those clusters are the biggest peices of junk ever made, i replace 2-3 clusters a week for different problems... the problem with the a/c is most likely the air temp actuator for the driver side, it isnt the easiest job to replace, you have to pull the dash back to get to it, and it is on top of the hvac case...

ALSO, when they said they "reprogrammed" the hvac module, they actually just recalibrated the actuators, we just say reprogrammed because waranty doesnt pay as much for recalibrating  ... but be sure and tell them to do that also when you take it back!!!! that alone could fix the problem and you may not even need to replace the actuator....

I had a similar problem also on a 2004. I wonder if they are really reprogramming the HVAC or simply pulling and replacing a fuse. This worked for me.

when you pull the right fuse for a few minutes and put it back in, it does almost the same thing... when a dealer does it, they use the tech 2 scanner... all there doing is reseting the actuators(pushing a button on the scan tool), they re-learn there max(full cold) and min(full hot) positions, over time the gears in the actuators will loosen up and the tolerances will change, if the actuators go past what they "think" is there max or min positions, then they default to full hot, untill the power is cycled... this is why they may need to be reset every so often to make sure this doesnt happen...
