New Gm Top End Cleaner Correct Procedure

I have an 06 Yukon XL Denali and am getting some cold start ticking until warm up. My dealer advises that it's carbon build up because it goes away when the engine hits 160 degrees. I want to try the new GM top end cleaner but am unsure how to do the procedure without damaging the MAF sensor or ETC. The mechanic at the dealer said to suck it in through the PCV hose or other vacuum hose. Do I need to disconnect the MAF sensor? Should I use the entire bottle of cleaner?

 

Do other cleaners like seafoam work as well?

I like seafoam just becasue it is cheaper and it seems the same end result should happen. I would use deep creap and spray it right into the throttle body after the MAF sensor. I might be wrong though. Brake booster line might work also.

The brake booster on mine uses the PS pump and not a vacuum line.

just suck it thru the pcv hose, you dont need to disconnect anything, it may or may not get rid of the noise... my truck has the same noise on cold starts, dont worry about, its common on those motors

KB, first of all I will have to agree with Alex that carbon is likely not the source of your cold ticking noise. However I do not care for the method of sucking Seafoam through your PCV line. It will certainly pull the cleaner into your engine but the cleaner will take the "path of least resistance" and most of it will travel down or or 2 intake runners. Granted, those cylinders will be clean, but what about the other 6 or 7?

 

I would first recommend Chevron's Techron at 1 oz per gallon and run this for 2 tanks. Techron is expensive but it does work on cleaing valves and combustion chambers. If you must use Seafoam I would recommend their aerosol, Deep Creep. Drill a small hole in the plastic intake tube just in front of your Throttle Body. With the engine warm, use the straw to injest the DC into the engine with it running at a fast idle. Be sure and hold the straw tight, you do not want it pulled into the intake. This method will allow the cleaner to be pulled into all intake runners equally. It will smoke terribly so make sure you are outside.

 

Once finished, plug the hole with a small sheet metal screw.

 

Again, I beilve your ticking is a valve train issue and not related to carbon but I could be wrong.

Some of the above vehicles may exhibit an engine knock noise that begins in the first 19,000-24,000 km (12,000-15,000 mi) of use. The knock noise is most often noticed during initial start-up and typically disappears within the first 5-30 seconds (may last longer in extreme cold temperatures). The noise is usually more noticeable on the initial start-up when the temperature is below 10°C (50°F) and may be more pronounced on the first cold start following a long trip.

 

This noise may be caused by an interaction between carbon that has formed on the piston, the piston motion and the cylinder wall. GM Powertrain Engineering, and an analysis of engines with this condition, has confirmed that the noise is not detrimental to the performance, reliability or durability of the engine. THIS NOISE DOES NOT HAVE ANY EFFECT ON THE LONGEVITY OF ANY OF THE ENGINE COMPONENTS.

 

Important: At this time, attempts to repair this condition by replacing the engine assembly or pistons are not recommended.

I have absolutely NO engine ticking/piston slap noise since I did the GM TSB I mentioned and it was very noticeable before. I have appr 152K on the truck and it's had loud cold start noise since about 20K.
