I was just building a truck for fun on chevy.com and while building the vehichle I came across option 9b9. It is a computer controlled governor that limits the top speed to 70 mph. Are you freaking kidding me. What's next, it's a standard feaure, and then you have to opt out of it.

Why would it be 70mph? That would mean you couldn't pass anyone going between 55-65 and pull it off. Also means in parts of the US you couldn't even go the speed limit.

I'm old enough to remember back in the early 80's when some Dodge cars came with a limiter of 55 from the factory when that was the national speed limit. It didn't last long when people realised to pass the car they were passing had to be going 15mph or slower than the speed limit to get around them.

My Dad drive a semi, and apparently down in the states you can end up at fault in an accident that really wasnt your fault because you ahve a speed limiter and therefore "are not in complete control of your vehicle", although that could be more of a big-rig kinda thing since people love trying to blame them for accidents. How many commercials have I seen where guys specialize in suing the big bad truckers...

Makes perfect sense as an option to me for rentals, fleet vehicles. Like you can rent pickups from Home Depot for hauling stuff...bet a 70mph limit sounds really good to them from a liability standpoint. Or how about small town highway departments, where the highest speed limit for miles is 50 or 55 and the trucks will never see an interstate. For goodness sake, they've been putting speed limiters on school buses, tractor trailers, and all sorts of other commercial vehicles for years. Y'all need to quit with this big brother paranoia stuff. Not every vehicle option is a huge conspiracy.

What about parents who buy cars for their HS aged kids. Sounds like a good deal to me. Here in the PHX area we've had numerous fatal accidents involving kids 'rushing' back to high school during lunch break. Some have been going 75-80 in 45mph zones when the accidents occured. A parent can also give the keys to junior and say, "Don't go above 65 on the freeway". If the kid is obedient he/she won't notice anything. If not, he/she will feel like a dumba** in front of his/her friends when the governor kicks in.

And one more thing, it's no different than having 'no outcalls' as an option on a cell phone plan. I.E. the person who's paying for the item/service gets to choose how the item/service is used.

Yep I saw that too, you would be suprised to find out alotta rental dump trucks, pickup trucks etc has this. I think its a good idea cause people dont treat rental vehicles like there own in most cases. As said above you have to order this and you wont see this on trucks sitting on the lot to be sold to the public, its a fleet order option.

Who cares? It wouldn't take much effort to get rid of that governor if you really wanted.

Ok safety on the slow side, how bout safety on the "need to get outta the way of the large truck comming at me" side.... Ive had to pass numerous vehicles before at above 75 in order not getting boxed in or hit from the side....What about merging onto the freeway, I only drive 4 miles to work each day, I hit 70 atleast once...............
