Computer Geeks! Where Are You?

How many of you build your own PCs or work on them?

I've been building performance PCs for years now and think it is the only way to go. So far this year I have built about 45 boxes for my day, shop, salespeople, shipping guys, etc. plus my own personal PCs at home.

I'd like to know who else in here is into their PC stuff way too deep like I am. We could probably create a whole 'nother section here.

I know Wingnut is a pretty sharp GEEK too but who else?

I'm a software developer. Yes, there are software companies out here in MT. Most of you have probably used our software at some point without realizing it. I write mainly C# & C, with a little bit of javascript & PHP. I've always built my own computers, I prefer to know exactly what components are in them.

I've built plenty of white-box puters over the years, but I primarily stick with OEM notebooks and desktops now (ie. Dell). Given how cheap they are and how I'm rather familiar with them, that's all I recommend! I rebuild and fix those things all the time... probably several hundred by now. :)

I'm a geek too...Building a Quad core in the new year.

Making the one I have now my new media center, as soon as blue ray wins the HD Disc war. I'll pop a blueray burner in there, and a HD TV out card, a 1TB drive and just use it for music and movies.

Yes, quad core is awesome. I can surf the net and check my e-mail faster than ever before!

I build my own, but generally stay away from doing it for others.

Plus, since I work on computers for a living, I don't like to work on them when I get home. The last full build I did was in '02, and I still use that PC. It's been upgraded a couple of times as things go bad (or my house is hit by lightning, blowing out half the components in it)...But now it's at a point to where there's not much I can do for ye' olde' Soyo KG7 Dragon Plus to make it any faster. Yeah, it's that old :)

So I'm casually looking for a new Motherboard, CPU, RAM, and Power supply to upgrade it.

I'm in no hurry because most of the time when I surf at home, I just use my laptop...Which unfortunately, you really can't build.

My Klipsch 5.1's finally freakin died a couple of months ago too. Dammit. I don't want to spend THAT money again.

I could not agree more. I work on a few for close friends and family but mostly I keep it business related (and then only when we have a major meltdown or build new PCs as an upgrade).

I knew I would draw you out... :)

Anybody else?

Just being silly...Been up for 20 hours or so.

In other news, my PC may have finally died. It's been off for a week or so, and because of this thread, I went in there to fire up the terabyte monster itself (gotta keep all the porn somewhere, right?) and I'm just getting one long beep and it shuts back down. So I get to figure that out some time soon.

WTF? Is it "every expensive thing you own is going to break" week or something?

You KNEW better than to plug that speaker wire into the 220... but you just had to go there. Now its Klipsch Krispies.

One long beep sounds like a memory fault. I can't remember Soyo's BIOS stuff anymore though.

    • Can ask that about a lot of places.   Holiday sells 91 for $1 over 87 octane. BP 93 is 80 cents. Amoco 93 is 80 cents Kwik Trips is $1.20 for 92 or whatever they have and $1 for the 91.   I know that this is not exactly same as what you are saying with the premium to premium debate of those two stations but why is there such a difference. Top Tier this and that, it's all BS. All the fuel comes from the same damn refinery, so give me a break.
    • Why does Mobil Premium cost 90 cents a gallon more than Shell Premium when their regular offerings are but pennies apart?
    • Was all the way down to $3.69 a gallon but then jumped back to $3.99 just because for some reason.   Diesel floats between $4.80's to $5.10ish a gallon. I even saw Diesel #1 for $6.09 today but nobody in there right mind even buys that in the summer.
    • Mine just keeps lagging or getting stuck on the reverse camera. When I turn off the truck, get out, and close the door it will still stay on. It’s very intermittent and I would not be able to duplicate the issue.
    • I was checking out fuel prices at my farm fuel retailer at their pumps and yes the farm price is a bit lower than the non dyed fuel and was glad to see that the regular farm gas price has dropped a lot from what it had been but what blew me away was the price of diesel as the spread now compared to before the prices went up earlier in the year, diesel was actually slightly lower than gas which was a switch from the theme the last number of years. However that sure isn't the theme lately and definitely not right now. The prices I will post are not from that retailer but just looking at gasbuddy for the main city in this area and instead of posting the lowest price someone found I will list the higher price ( and that may not be the highest price, just whatever someone posted on gasbuddy ).   So regular gas and there are a lot of stations listing the same price for regular is 1.68 a liter, premium 2.00 a liter. Diesel 2.03 a liter for a top price I saw on diesel.   Figures out to 6.36 a us gallon Canadian funds for regular and 7.68 for diesel. With the US exchange rate it would be 4.58 us for regular and 5.53 for diesel.    Thought I would figure that out to get a picture of what it settles out like compared to various US prices and its about the same as the current price in Fairbanks AK as Anchorage tends to be lower. So yes, these would be the prices and higher along the way on the Alaska highway where they know they have a captured market !, for fuel prices for those beginning the long drive back to the lower 48   The problem is our Canadian dollar and going to the states that have the high prices, boy do we pay then !
