Transmission Fluid Question...

I checked the trans fluid in my truck today, the fluid is like a deep red color, with a very slight odor to it. My question is- what does new fluid smell like? GM says to change the trans fluid at 50,000 miles, my truck has 45,400 miles, I guess I'll have it changed at the 50,000 mark, since I plow with teh truck (they say to wait until 100,000 miles otherwise).

I would do the tranny service as soon as possible. I don't think it would be wise to do any plowing with tranny fluid in that condition.

 

Personally, I do a tranny service, including filter, every 12,000 mi and also change the tranny spin-on filter in between the services at 6,000 mi. I pull an 8,000# fifth wheel and my fluid is a bright pink and odorless.

According to the GM tech I spoke to, the fluid is fine as long as it isn't brown- mine is red- I'd say I'm okay, no?

Heat kills transmissions. It takes heat to brown your fluid. It'll get a burnt smell to it when its starting to go. Once it starts to get a burn smell/starts to brown its no longer lubricating like it should and its need changed asap.

 

Trans fluid will have an oder to it, it stinks. But it shouldn't smell burnt. If its red you should be fine yet. Mine is at 47,000 since last change and I pull a 6,500lb trailer pretty regularly and mine is still red. I tow convservity and my trans temp rarely hits 200(only with a heavier load). I'd think you would be fine.

Thanks, I think I'm okay, my fluid is red, not brown, and the fluid smells like the fluids in all our other cars ( I smell tested them), so I'm thinking I'm okay. I'll probably have it changed at 50,000 miles.
